The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking an Equipment Technician 3 – Parts professional to join our team and support the agency’s mission of keeping Washington’s roadways safe for travel. This role is responsible for researching, procuring, receiving, and issuing critical equipment replacement parts using established purchasing rules and the Fleet Equipment Management System (M5). The position manages stock for five inventory locations across the North Central Region while ensuring accurate data entry into M5 and the Purchase Card database. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting WSDOT’s safety program by maintaining the parts inventory essential to keeping our fleet operational and roadway crews equipped.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Equipment Technician 3 will:
- Procure, receive, store, inventory, and issue replacement parts for automotive, light truck, heavy equipment, and heavy truck fleets using the Fleet Equipment Management System (FEMS).
- Process and track payable invoices, P-Card transactions, and financial records to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
- Maintain accurate on-hand inventory, generate inventory reports, and coordinate the return of outdated parts to vendors.
- Set up and manage new part numbers, bin locations, and stock levels to meet operational needs.
- Meet with vendors and sales representatives to discuss product availability, compare pricing, and make recommendations to management.
- Keep parts areas, warehouses, and storage locations clean, safe, and organized with proper labeling and rotation of stock.
- Collaborate with regional and area shop staff to fulfill orders, address inventory issues, and support equipment needs.
- Attend training sessions and meetings and perform additional duties as assigned to support team and regional operations.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:
- Fleet Administrative Experience: Demonstrated experience performing administrative functions in an automotive, heavy-duty, industrial, commercial vehicle, or equipment fleet environment.
- Customer Service & Professional Communication: Experience interacting with the public in a customer service capacity and ability to communicate professionally through computer, phone, and in-person interactions.
- Technology & Software Proficiency: Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using software programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, and Fleet Management Systems to complete job tasks effectively.
- Respect and Equity: Demonstrates the ability to contribute to a work environment that fosters respect, inclusion, and equal opportunity for all.
In addition to the above, the following is also required:
- A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a state-owned vehicle.
- Available for callouts or overtime as needed.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- Technical Training in Equipment or Parts: Successful completion of a vocational or technical training program in heavy truck, heavy equipment, or industrial/commercial equipment repair or parts from an accredited institution.
- High School Diploma or Equivalent: Possession of a high school diploma or GED.
