DSHS WSH Staffing Specialist
Washington State Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS) is seeking a Staffing Specialist (Program Specialist 3) to join our team at Western State Hospital in Nursing Services. The Staffing Specialist is responsible for organization wide (WSH) implementation of daily/weekly/monthly staff schedules within the electronic scheduling system for approximately 1300 Nursing employees and supervisors. This includes developing processes for staffing operations and providing recommendations to Management on changes due to complex issues that may arise. Integral knowledge of the organization is required to coordinate all aspects of staffing, to include maintaining tracking systems for staff that are on L&I, FMLA leave usage, and a variety of other reasons that relieve a staff member from working on their respective wards.
The schedule is 2pm-12:30pm Wednesday-Saturday. This is a 100% on-site position.Some of what you will do:
- Recommends to the Hospital Staffing Manger on staffing/schedule changes that minimize unnecessary overtime, creation of non-permanent positions to meet staffing needs, and to overcome barriers to optimal staffing practices.
- Defines needs and planning; designs and develops daily/weekly/monthly staffing coverage in collaboration with the Hospital Staffing Manager and RN3/RN4’s.
- Organize and prioritize administrative activities for assigned shift.
- Complete timecards/leave tracker for the assigned shift
- Utilize the Scheduler system, analyze complex and fluid daily hospital staffing numbers for an 800 bed psychiatric treatment facility to determine staff shortages for the current and following shift.
- Supervises Program Coordinators that perform daily staffing duties, ensuring safe staffing for direct care nursing positions at a 24/7 psychiatric treatment facility.
- Evaluates staff performance and provides ongoing feedback to help staff develop and enhance their skills.
What we’re looking for:
- Bachelor's Degree AND two years of experience including planning, policy analysis, and coordination and consultation with a variety of public and private agencies, organizations, and/or levels of government
- Professional-level experience may be substituted for education on an equal basis

- Strong attention to detail to ensure accuracy in the content of work produced
- Ability to work independently, multitask and prioritize workload
