The Opportunity
WSDOT is currently seeking several Construction Compliance Inspector (TE2)'s to support the I-405/SR 167 Program based in Bothell, WA. In these roles, you will play a key part in ensuring major transportation projects are constructed in accordance with contract requirements, safety standards, and quality expectations. You will work closely with project teams and contractors to verify compliance, document progress, and support the successful delivery of complex infrastructure improvements that benefit communities across the region. Your work directly supports WSDOT’s mission by helping deliver reliable, cost-effective transportation systems that improve mobility and strengthen communities across the region.


What to Expect
These positions are primarily field-based and involves working on active construction sites in a variety of weather conditions, with frequent travel to job sites throughout the region.

Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, you will:

  • Perform daily inspections of Design-Build construction activities to ensure compliance with contract requirements, specifications, and quality standards. 
  • Document inspection activities through detailed daily reports, photos, and project tracking systems. 
  • Communicate non-compliance issues to project staff and contractors, documenting and tracking resolution through established systems. 
  • Complete construction documentation to support contract records, including compliance tracking, audits, and field reviews. 
  • Conduct audits and verify contractor and subcontractor compliance with contract requirements, including wage rate interviews and on-site reviews. 
  • Perform materials verification inspections and testing in both field and lab settings, including concrete and soil testing. 
  • Transport materials, samples, and equipment, and work in environments that may include uneven terrain, heavy equipment, and active traffic. 
  • Share knowledge and support the training of new inspectors on standard practices, procedures, and documentation requirements. 


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following competencies are required:

  • Applied Engineering Expertise: Ability to apply engineering principles, methods, and standards to transportation or infrastructure projects to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Technical Problem-Solving and Analysis: Skill in identifying issues, evaluating solutions, and applying sound judgment to support safe and effective project outcomes.
  • Specialized Engineering Knowledge: Understanding of civil, structural, geotechnical, traffic, or transportation engineering concepts and their application in a construction environment.
  • Operational Readiness and Safety: Ability to safely operate vehicles, travel to field locations, and follow established safety procedures in active construction environments.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and continuous improvement.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of team members, partners, and the public.


 The following qualifications are also required:

  • A valid driver’s license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
  • Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also demonstrate:

  • Construction Practices and Contract Knowledge: Understanding construction methods and contract administration principles.
  • Engineering Application: Ability to apply civil engineering principles and methods to moderately complex problems.
  • Inspection and Documentation: Knowledge of inspection techniques and field documentation used to verify quality and quantities of work.
  • Communication Skills: Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.
  • Contract Document Interpretation: Experience reviewing and interpreting plans, specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Technical Tools and Systems: Experience using construction tracking systems and standard office software to document and manage project information.
  • Professional Development and Certification: Ability to obtain or demonstrate progress toward an Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or equivalent technical credential.

  • This position is not eligible for remote work.
  • The salary listed includes the legislative approved 5% salary premium for positions in King County. 
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position. For union-represented positions, more information on other forms of compensation can be found in the applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements. Information on other compensation types for non-represented positions can be found in Chapter 357-28 of the Washington Administrative Code.
