The Office of the Insurance Commissioner (OIC) seeks a qualified individual for the Administrative Intern – Enforcement Unit position. This role is within the Legal Affairs Division and is based out of our Tumwater Office.

About the Position 

We’re excited to officially launch the Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s Internship Program—and we’re looking for motivated college students and recent graduates interested in legal and regulatory careers to join our Legal Affairs Division!


The Administrative Intern I provides administrative, clerical, and project-based support within the Legal Affairs Division, working closely with attorneys, investigators, and paralegal staff.


This internship offers hands-on experience in a legal and regulatory environment where interns contribute to work that protects consumers and ensures compliance with Washington State insurance laws. The Legal Affairs Division serves as a key partner in advancing regulatory excellence by investigating complaints, enforcing state insurance laws, and providing legal guidance across the agency.


In this role, interns may assist with legal research, document preparation, and case file organization, while supporting the review and analysis of complaints and potential violations of state law (including RCWs and WACs). Interns may also gain exposure to enforcement actions, regulatory compliance processes, and the interpretation and application of laws affecting the insurance industry.


Additionally, interns may support work related to legislative analysis, rulemaking, and policy implementation—providing a unique opportunity to see how laws are developed, interpreted, and enforced in a public sector setting.


This position serves as a valuable entry point for individuals interested in careers in law, public policy, regulatory affairs, or government service.


This recruitment may be used to establish a qualified pool of candidates for Administrative Intern vacancies in the next sixty days.


This is a non-perm/ temporary position lasting 12 weeks, with an expected schedule of 20-25 hours per week.  


This is a Washington General Service position. The hourly range for this position is $19.64 - $23.67.

The duties of the position include but are not limited to:


Under direct supervision, you will support a variety of administrative, research, and project-based functions within the division. Responsibilities may include:


  • Provide general administrative support, including scheduling, document preparation, records management, data entry, and responding to emails or phone inquiries 
  • Conduct research on insurance laws, regulations, and industry trends; compile and analyze information to support agency work 
  • Assist with drafting reports, summaries, and other written materials related to policy and regulatory topics 
  • Support regulatory processes by reviewing filings and helping ensure compliance with state laws and regulations 
  • Contribute to project work by collaborating with team members, meeting deadlines, and completing assigned tasks 
  • Assist with customer service by responding to public inquiries and helping explain insurance-related information and consumer rights 
  • Participate in meetings by taking notes and supporting coordination of events, workshops, or team activities 
  • Help prepare presentations, maintain organized files, and support overall office operations 
  • Collaborate with staff across teams to support initiatives that strengthen consumer protection and insurance regulation

Required Qualifications: 


  • At least 18 years of age at the time of hire
  • Completion of at least four semesters or six quarters work (or equivalent) at an accredited* college or university

OR 

  • Recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation) majoring in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Actuarial Science or a related field

AND

  • Knowledge of proper grammatical constructions and sentence/paragraph development
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions, comprehend directives and regulations, conduct research and compile meaningful written reports
  • Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills

Degree or course work must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent. If a degree was awarded outside the United States, candidates must provide a credential evaluation report. Proof of course work or degree will be required prior to employment.


Preferred/Desired Qualifications: 


  • Coursework in Paralegal Studies, Legal Ethics, Legal Research and Writing, Civil Law/Procedures, or Legal/Law Office Technology 
  • Basic level of Microsoft Office Suite skills (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong communication, organization, and time management skills 
  • Ability to adapt, learn quickly, and work effectively in a team environment 
  • Strong attention to detail, work ethic, and ability to prioritize tasks 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and follow rules, regulations, and agency policies (including RCWs and WACs)
