About the Position
We’re excited to launch the Washington State Office of the Insurance Commissioner’s Internship Program and are looking for motivated college students and recent graduates who are interested in actuarial science, data analysis, economics, finance, or public service to join our Rates, Forms, and Provider Networks Division (Actuarial Services Team)
Our internship program offers students and recent graduates a hands-on introduction to public service, with opportunities to support meaningful work in our Property & Casualty Actuarial Team and Life & Health Actuarial Team. Under the guidance of experienced staff, interns assist with projects that may include reviewing insurance filings, researching industry trends, analyzing data, and supporting regulatory and policy-related work.
This is an ideal opportunity for students with strong quantitative and analytical interests who want to apply their skills in a real-world setting while building a foundation in government operations. Interns gain exposure to how insurance rates are evaluated, how actuarial concepts are applied in practice, and how data informs regulatory decisions, while also developing essential administrative, organizational, and communication skills.

This is a non-perm/ temporary position lasting 12 weeks, with an expected schedule of 20-25 hours per week.
This is a Washington General Service position. The hourly range for this position is $19.64 - $23.67.

The duties of the position include but are not limited to:
- Provide administrative and clerical support to assigned teams, including scheduling, document preparation, filing, and data entry
- Assist with reviewing insurance filings, reports, and supporting documentation to ensure compliance with state laws and regulations
- Conduct research on insurance topics, industry trends, and regulatory changes, and summarize findings for staff
- Compile and analyze data to help identify trends, patterns, or areas of concern related to consumer complaints or insurance practices
- Support staff with policy and regulatory work by helping draft summaries, reports, or internal documents
- Use tools like Microsoft Excel to organize, track, and analyze information
- Collaborate with team members on projects, meeting deadlines and contributing to shared goals
- Participate in meetings, take notes, and assist with coordination of team activities or events
- Respond to general inquiries and support customer service efforts by helping provide information to the public
- Perform a variety of general office and administrative tasks while gaining exposure to government operations and regulatory processes

Required Qualifications:
- At least 18 years of age at the time of hire
- Completion of at least four semesters or six quarters work (or equivalent) at an accredited* college or university
OR
- Recent college graduate (within 6 months of graduation) majoring in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Mathematics, Actuarial Science or a related field
AND
- Knowledge of proper grammatical constructions and sentence/ paragraph development
- Knowledge of basic mathematics
- Demonstrated ability to follow directions, comprehend directives and regulations, conduct research and compile meaningful written reports
- Demonstrated effective verbal and written communication skills
Degree or course work must be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent. If a degree was awarded outside the United States, candidates must provide a credential evaluation report. Proof of course work or degree will be required prior to employment.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Coursework in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics, finance, or a related field
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with an interest in working with data and solving problems
- Familiarity with basic actuarial or statistical concepts (e.g., through coursework or introductory exams is a plus)
- Proficiency using Microsoft Excel, including basic functions for organizing and analyzing data
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to summarize information clearly and concisely
- High attention to detail and accuracy when working with data, documents, or written materials
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and take responsibility for assigned work
- Interest in public service, government operations, or insurance regulation
- Demonstrated reliability, professionalism, and willingness to learn in a structured work environment
