The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking highly motivated and talented individual for the position of a Corrections Specialist Assistant for the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) Compliance program at the Washington Corrections Center (WCC) in Shelton, Washington.

Washington Corrections Center is located 35 miles north of Olympia, the state capital. WCC is predominantly a Reception and Diagnostic Center, a close, medium-and long-term minimum custody facility. The facility has a primary responsibility to process, test, and classify all adult male incarcerated individuals sentenced to prison in Washington State. The facility has seven living units, compromised of 5 close custody reception units, and 3 medium and long-term minimum units. WCC houses approximately 1,800 incarcerated individuals. There are approximately 500 incarcerated individuals screened and processed each month. WCC also serves as a major transportation hub responsible for the transfer of incarcerated individuals to and from facilities throughout the state.

We are searching for an adaptable and dependable team member who has excellent written and verbal communication skills to assume the critical role of Corrections Specialist Assistant and ensure WCC is operating in support of the mission, vision, and strategic plan of the agency. At Washington Corrections Center, an adult correctional facility, this position provides primary, confidential assistance to the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) office. This position must know and understand agency policies as well as the Department of Justice Prisons Rape Elimination Act Standards in order to assist staff. This position must maintain confidentiality of information learned through job performance that is protected by DOC policy, federal and/or state law. In the absence of the PREA Compliance Specialist (Correctional Specialist 3), this position assists with the daily tasks and meets the required timeframes associated with PREA compliance. This position supports the Department's mission by filling an important role in a critical correctional program (PREA).

Duties

  • Maintain all PREA tracking spreadsheets based on information received from Headquarters and facilities.
  • Verify completion of housing chronological events, initial risk assessment, follow up risk assessment, PREA orientation, PREA monitoring plan/rehabilitation monitoring if required, and date of mental health follow up if required.
  • Participate in facility preparation for the Depart of Justice PREA audits conducted every three years.
  • Prepare correspondence to incarcerated individuals regarding PREA.
  • At the direction of the PREA Compliance Specialists, schedule meetings with staff and/or outside stakeholders and take minutes.
  • Attend facility and/or agency-wide meetings on behalf of the PREA Compliance Specialist.
  • Maintain the case file tracker.
  • Ensure law enforcement referrals are initiated as required.
  • Scan completed investigation to the electronic file and submit to headquarters.
  • When an investigation is initiated, build the hard copy and electronic case file and ensure the original IMRS is included as well as any other pertinent information.
  • Upon completion of an investigation, ensure all required documents forms are included in the file and scan the complete investigation to the electronic file and the DOC PREA Unit for closure.
  • Update PREA investigations spreadsheet.
  • Maintains retaliation monitoring for incarcerated individuals who report a PREA allegation, alleged incarcerated individual victims, and staff reporters of PREA allegations.
  • Ensure retaliation monitoring is conducted for 90 days and reports are completed.

Qualifications

Required qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED
Two (2) years of clerical experience

Preferred/Desired qualifications:
Knowledge of computers, understanding of multi-line telephone systems, basic knowledge of office equipment (copiers, scanners, fax machine)

Telework Details

This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
