Location: Stafford Creek Corrections Center | Aberdeen, WA
Salary Range: $5,564 - $7,489 Monthly

This position is represented by the Teamsters 117 Bargaining Unit.

This position does not allow for teleworking.

The Washington State Department of Corrections’ mission is to improve public safety by positively changing lives. The Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI) Unit within the Reentry Team is responsible for the implementation of evidence-based practices and interventions to incarcerated individuals, therefore decreasing recidivism while also increasing the safety of staff, incarcerated individuals and the public.

The CBI Unit is searching for a Corrections Specialist 2 who will provide program facilitation, expertise, and technical assistance to ensure delivery of Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBIs) in alignment with evidence-based practices.

The candidate of choice will contribute to the Department’s mission and vision by delivering CBIs to higher risk individuals to address and change antisocial thinking and behaviors. These interventions, which target the criminogenic needs of the participants, provide opportunities to engage in cognitive self-change and develop skills needed to enhance social abilities and improve problem solving. With development of these skills, participants may think in ways that change their actions which lead to safer communities and safer correctional operations

Duties

As a Corrections Specialist 2, some of your duties will include:
  • Providing professional delivery of all Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI’s) within the inventory of the Cognitive Behavioral Interventions (CBI) Unit to participants within the facility which could include:
    • Screening and assigning participants to designated CBI Program using approved criteria
    • Scheduling and entering callouts for multiple sessions
    • Facilitating multiple sessions of CBI group programming to participants as a single facilitator and/or as a lead facilitator with other trained support facilitation staff
    • Administering the program as dictated in the approved intervention handbook
    • Completing participant orientations to CBI programs
    • Observing and monitoring participant participation and provide feedback on the lesson by providing positive reinforcement and additional coaching as needed
    • Scheduling and facilitating make-up sessions as necessary and in accordance with the program requirements
  • Communicating with stakeholders on the status of ongoing CBI’s within the facility
  • Documenting individuals’ participation in accordance with program requirements and the intervention handbook
  • Participating in and complete all scheduled training/coaching sessions for CBI programs, and successfully demonstrate mastery of material within prescribed timelines
  • Attending and participating in CBI Fidelity Unit assessment, feedback, coaching and booster sessions to reinforce/improve skills in program delivery.

Qualifications

What we need (required qualifications):
  • Satisfactory completion of two (2) years of college (60 semester or 90 quarter credits) from an accredited college or university whose accreditation is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or foreign equivalent
AND
  • Three years of professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections, social services or closely related field
OR
  • High school diploma, GED or equivalency
AND
  • Three (3) years of professional experience in adult or juvenile corrections, social services or closely related field with at least 2 of those years involved in the direct delivery or facilitation of evidence-based programming such as Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions

In addition to the above education/experience requirements, this position requires demonstrated competency in the following areas (competency may be gained through education, experience, or a combination thereof):
  • Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
  • Familiarity with Washington State databases including OMNI
  • In addition to at least one of the above, this position requires demonstrated competency in the following areas (competency may be gained through education, experience, or a combination thereof):
    • Facilitator Skills - Demonstrates empathy, facilitation/teaching techniques; understanding of group processes and interpersonal interactions, and the ability to control a group of incarcerated individual participants through non-coercive means.
    • Community Relationships - Participates in the formation and maintenance of successful relationships with criminal justice partners and community resources.
    • Observation - Observes and strategizes personal response based on environmental conditions and human behavior.
    • Stress Tolerance - Remains calm and rational while handling difficult situations to include, but not limited to, volatile, threatening, or other crisis/emergency situations. Expertly intervenes in response to threats.
    • Adaptability - Incorporates new information into and exiting framework of understanding. Accepts change and supports the Agency through changes in law, policy and procedure.

Telework Details
This position may be allocated for telework. Work may be performed from your home or another offsite location within the state of Washington using a reliable internet or cellular hotspot service at that time. Employees are expected to perform assigned duties in a safe manner, to take proper care all state-issued equipment, and maintain confidentiality of all information in possession while working offsite. Employees will be required to commute to a Department of Corrections facility or field office as business requires, to potentially include components of the onboarding process. Some offices will have a “drop in” area available, however, a dedicated workspace within a DOC facility will not be provided.
