What are the responsibilities and job description for the Veteran Services Officer II position at State of Vermont?

Overview

This position requires the candidate to have extensive experience as a certified Veteran Service Officer and have an in-depth understanding of the processes for filing veterans' claims and those of eligible family members for federal Department of Veterans Affairs benefits. Additionally, the ideal candidate will have experience with filing appeals. This is a supervisory position and will supervise a total of five Veteran Service Officer I positions to ensure the accurate and timely submission of claims.

Special Requirements: Must be a nationally accredited Veteran Service Officer and be able to be certified by the Office of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Veteran Service Officer and must maintain re-accreditation in each subsequent year. Must complete US Department of Veterans Affairs requirements for claims representation within the first 6-months of hire to include: Pass TRIP training, finger printing requirements, and a federal background check through the US Department of Veterans Affairs.

Must continuously hold a valid driver's license.

Environmental Factors

Duties are generally performed in a standard office setting but some field work will necessitate private means of transportation. Adversarial situations may be encountered for which tact and diplomacy will be needed. Clients with mental health challenges may be encountered for which awareness of the situation, patience, and consideration for safety will be needed.

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduation or equivalent and seven (7) years at a technical level in providing counseling or other client services, including one year providing services or assistance to veterans.

Note: College training may be substituted for up to three years of the general experience on a semester for six months basis.
