JOB TITLE: TERRESTRIAL WILDLIFE BIOLOGIST II

Job Description

If you are goal oriented, have a passion for wildlife, and know how to help others succeed, then the Wildlife Biologist with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is the job for you! As the Wildlife Biologist, you will manage wildlife in the Pine Valley/Zion District by collecting biological data, making hunt recommendations and resolving conflicts between humans and wildlife. You will also create and strengthen local partnerships with members of the public, private landowners, public land users and user groups, conservation organizations, and state and federal government agencies.

Working for the DWR as a Wildlife Biologist will provide rewarding work experiences with wildlife and will build lasting relationships with a variety of constituents as you act as trustee and guardian of the State's protected wildlife. Responsibilities

  • Collect and review biological data and get to know the wildlife resources in your District.
  • Make innovative hunt recommendations that allow for increased hunter opportunity.
  • Write Species Management Plans that allow for species sustainability.
  • Be part of a team of DWR Employees implementing the priorities of the Wildlife Section.
  • Assist and educate private landowners, conservation groups, and state and federal government agencies with wildlife challenges and opportunities.
  • Respond to wildlife nuisance and depredation situations.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS Degree or higher in Wildlife Science or closely related field, or directly related work experience equivalent.
  • Knowledge of principles, theories and practices of wildlife sciences, wildlife ecology and habitat requirements.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form with other DWR employees, private landowners, conservation groups and other government agencies.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team with other DWR employees, government agencies, the public, and to deal with difficult people on occasion.

Preferred/Additional Qualifications:

  • Well established communication and negotiations skills with a demonstrated ability to organize and coordinate programs.
  • Ability to develop and write management plans.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Experience with chemical immobilization and other trapping and immobilizing techniques.
  • Safe firearm use.
  • Ability to safely pull trailers and operate ATV's/UTV's/snowmobiles.

Special Working Conditions Or Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical requirement. Field work requires some physical exertion such as walking over rough terrain, snow covered or rocky surfaces, and lifting of heavy items.
  • Working some nights, weekends and holidays as necessary or in emergency situations.
  • Occasional risks that are found in potentially dangerous or unusual environmental situations (e.g., depredation, wildlife management projects, check stations).
  • Overnight travel within Utah is sometimes required to attend meetings, conferences, support wildlife management projects, etc.

Certifications/Licenses: (required at the time of hire or must obtain during probationary period or designated time-frame):

  • Driver’s license
  • First Aid and CPR
  • Hunter Education Certificate of Completion
  • Must be able to receive DOPL and DEA licenses to inventory and handle controlled chemical immobilization substances.

Miscellaneous

Must live within close distance of units for call out response time, available for call out for various emergencies or nuisance wildlife incidents.

General Safety, Drugs Access, Firearms, Travel, Call Out, Weekends/Holiday.
