What are the responsibilities and job description for the Rotational Engineer - Structures position at State of Utah?
Are you a recent graduate or are you within one year of graduating from a Civil Engineering program? Are you looking for an opportunity to learn different areas of transportation engineering from a bridges and structures perspective? If so, the Utah Department of Transportation's Engineering Rotational Program is for you. This is a four-year program for non-licensed engineers with limited engineering experience. During your rotation with the Structures Division, you will learn how to apply structural engineering and detailing techniques to a variety of areas related to bridges and structures including design, preservation, asset management, and construction inspection.
As a rotational engineer, you will perform assignments under the direct supervision of a Professional Engineer. Tasks may include structural design of bridges, walls and other miscellaneous structures, structural detailing using specialized software (MicroStation, Mathcad, or various concrete and steel design or analysis programs), CADD plan production, bridge inspection, structural load rating calculations, geometric layout and bridge type studies as well as on-site field work such as bridge inspection and construction support.Principal Duties
As a Rotational Engineer, you will:
- Work in a team environment as well as independently while challenging yourself to acquire knowledge and experience in engineering.
- Perform routine engineering assignments requiring application of standard techniques and procedures.
- Conduct analyses to develop design options or recommendations and assist in the preparation of cost estimates and specifications for structural engineering projects.
- Work on projects that typically include bridges (steel plate girder, prestress concrete), box culverts, and interchange design for highway projects.
- Support the bridge design group and other disciplines (geotechnical, hydraulics, roadway, environmental) by applying structural engineering and detailing techniques in the development of structural designs.
- Support the bridge management group in a variety of tasks associated with asset management, load ratings, concept reports, and bridge inspection.
- Assist with geometric layout and quantity take offs.
- Perform structural load calculations using specialized structural design and analysis software. Prepare detailed drawings, layouts, and sketches for conventional concrete and steel bridges, retaining walls, and miscellaneous structures using computer-aided design software, primarily MicroStation.
- Collect data and evaluate available information, determine the accuracy and validity of sources and appropriateness for use.
- Write or draft technical reports, articles or related material based on research, investigation or analysis.
- Perform bridge inspections and prepare reports in accordance with NBIS (National Bridge Inspection Standards).
- Support construction implementation and observation; review shop drawings and field submittals.
Required Minimum Qualifications
This position will be filled as either an Engineer I or Engineer II based on the criteria listed below. The hourly rate for the Engineer I is $35.93 and the hourly rate for the Engineer II is $40.24.
