The Utah Historical Society (UHS) seeks a Marketing Specialist to help shape the agency’s ongoing communications and marketing efforts. The Marketing Specialist will work alongside the Marketing and Communications Director to help manage and support comprehensive communication strategies for UHS and the forthcoming Museum of Utah, set to open June 27, 2026. The Marketing Specialist will be responsible for content creation across various platforms, primarily UHS social media channels, but also: managing and maintaining the UHS blog, writing copy for advertisements, curating a monthly e-newsletter, and more. The Marketing Specialist will also help in measuring and analyzing key performance metrics, including social media, to gauge marketing effectiveness and audience engagement.

In addition, the Marketing Specialist will play a key role in audience development, helping to create engaging, relevant content to expand UHS’ reach. This role also involves helping coordinate and implement UHS campaigns, such as Utah History Month, Women’s History Month, and Civic Season. Successful candidates will have demonstrated public-facing work, knowledge of social media, be comfortable working independently, have attention to detail, and respect for key deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

  • Social Media (30%) : Helps develop and facilitate the agency’s social media strategy across various platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Manages UHS’ social media communities by engaging with followers and responding to messages. Proactively identifies and cultivates marketing and promotional collaborations with statewide partners and relevant organizations to amplify UHS.
  • Content Creation & Management (30%) : Responsible for supporting creative concept ideation and asset creation, writing, and working with subject matter experts on staff to ensure accuracy of key messages. This includes content creation for social media channels, advertisements, and other outlets as needed. Builds and manages a comprehensive calendar for UHS that details all external communications, including blog posts, newsletters, and social media.
  • Digital Presence & Website Maintenance (10%) : Provides support in performing basic website updates (content refreshes, adding events to the calendar, and maintaining the UHS blog) to ensure content is current and accurate.
  • Blog & Newsletter Coordination (10%) : Work with content experts on staff to source, write, and edit content for the blog and the monthly e-newsletter, ensuring a professional and consistent brand voice.
  • Campaigns (10%) : Provides support in the planning and implementation of key UHS campaigns, including Utah History Month, Women’s History Month, and Civic Season.
  • Analytics (5%) : Works alongside the Marketing and Communications Director to measure and understand key analytics, including web, social media, newsletter, and others. Compile and analyze data on social media performance and audience engagement.
  • Strategy (5%) : Supports the Marketing and Communications Director in building and managing an overarching communications strategy for the Utah Historical Society, while also supporting larger marketing efforts for the Department of Cultural & Community Engagement.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is an experienced storyteller and communications generalist who can synthesize complex historical narratives into a unified, compelling brand voice. A successful candidate is a proactive professional who can navigate the nuances of Utah’s rich history and culture while maintaining a high level of organizational oversight. You will be responsible for developing and managing a comprehensive, multi-channel editorial and social media calendar. This calendar must strategically balance and amplify the UHS mission across our primary initiatives, including but not limited to: National History Day in Utah, Women’s History Initiative, Peoples of Utah Revisited, Libraries and Collections, Publications, and the Museum of Utah.

  • Demonstrated communication and social media experience, preferably in a cultural organization setting. While a degree can demonstrate some of this, we will be looking to lived experiences and successful execution in previous roles.
  • Excellent written communications skills; can turn complex ideas into clear, simple language; editing, copyediting, and proofreading skills preferred.
  • Able to take initiative and prioritize tasks; excellent time management and respect for deadlines.
  • Understanding of social media trends, audience development, and data analytics; able to analyze data to make informed decisions.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage social media channels and up-and-coming marketing tools and techniques.
  • Is a creative thinker; has an eye for design and an understanding of basic design principles and best practices.
  • Has knowledge and understanding of Wordpress, Emma, and Adobe Express.
  • Able to assist in building and managing multi-media advertising campaigns.
  • Has at least three years of demonstrated experience in the marketing and communications sector.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three or more years of relevant experience in communications, advertising, or marketing related fields.
