The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking a visionary and dynamic individual to join USDB as a Deaf Mentor in the Utah County area.


Roles and Responsibilities
As a Deaf Mentor you will:
  • Provide home-based services to families with deaf/hard-of-hearing children, age birth to three years, in the areas of American Sign Language (ASL) and deaf culture.
  • Prepare and write lesson plans.
  • Perform weekly home visits to children and families, following the curriculum provided, and models for parents the activities to be worked on with children during the week;
  • Help families access deaf community activities and events.
  • Apply bilingual, bicultural teaching methods to deaf/hard-of-hearing children.

Minimum Requirements
The Ideal Candidate:
  • Must be deaf.
  • Must have advanced American Sign Language (ASL) skills.
  • Must have knowledge of Deaf culture.
  • Must be well-versed in language acquisition, principles of ASL best practices, and have a specialization in teaching adults the principles of ASL and Deaf culture.
  • Deal with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality.

  • Travel is required.
  • Must be willing to work a schedule that meets the needs of the families being served, including evenings and Saturdays, and be willing to participate in multiple Deaf culture events throughout the year.
  • Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Typically, the employee may sit comfortably to perform the work; however, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying light items; driving an automobile, etc. Special physical demands are not required to perform the work.
  • Preference may be given to applicants with a degree in Early Childhood Education and/or experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children.
  • Work schedule typically Monday through Friday, seven-and-one-half (7-1/2) hours per day, 183 days per school year.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
