Qualifications

Education and Experience: Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited two year college or technical institute with a major in electrical technology, mechanical technology, engineering or other related acceptable field and experience equivalent to five or more years of full-time electrical work including, at least, one year of lead electrical inspection experience.

Substitution of Experience for Education: Additional qualifying electrical experience may be substituted for the required education, on a year-for-year basis, to a maximum of two years.

OR

Two years of full-time electrical inspection experience as an Electrical Inspector- Lead with the State of Tennessee.

Must be certified by the National Certification Program for Construction Codes Inspectors (NCPCCI), the International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI) or the International Code Council (ICC) as a One and Two Family Electrical Inspector and an Electrical General Inspector, and licensed by the State of Tennessee.

A valid motor vehicle license may be required for employment in some positions.

Overview

This classification has a large sized workload functioning at the supervisory level performing electrical inspection work of considerable difficulty. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising and evaluating the work of the Electrical Inspector Lead as well as performing local exempt jurisdiction audits and inspections. This class differs from that of Electrical Inspector Advanced in that an incumbent of the latter does not lead/coordinate Electrical Inspector Associates and Intermediates. This class differs from that of the Fire and Building Code Inspection Manager, in that the incumbent of the latter is responsible for managing all statewide programs related to residential building, electrical inspections, and marina/floating cabin electrical safety inspections.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to any electrical inquires, policy, procedure, and TCA (Tennessee Code Annotated) for electrical contractors, issuing agents, power supply companies, homeowners, builders, and those in the business community. Schedules electrical inspections in the CORE licensing system to ensure that timelines established by law and regulation are met. Interprets or explains rejection notices to customers.
  • Performs local exempt jurisdiction audits regarding permitting and inspection of electrical installations. Conducts inspections of local exempt jurisdictions when requested.
  • Supervises the work of Electrical Inspectors at the Lead level. Participates in the hiring/interviewing process.
  • Attends court proceedings as a code specialist when required.
  • Receives information regarding electrical codes from National Fire Prevention Association.
  • Coaches electrical contractors on advanced permitting purchasing such as non-standard electrical permits on the CORE licensing system. Coaches electrical contractors and DEIs on conducting inspections as well as the codes, rules and regulations involving electrical inspections. Creates presentations and meeting agendas for contractors and DEIs.
  • Consults with state authorities to determine whether a job falls under the authority of State Fire Marshal's Office and responds to inquiries regarding product approval by contacting a nationally recognized testing laboratory.
  • Attends contractors and semiannual meetings of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors and/or International Code Council. Attends semiannual Deputy Electrical Inspector meeting. Attend yearly Southern Section meeting of the IAEI. Assist internal customers in the coordination of regional contractor meetings.
  • Conducts inspections and site visits to confirm compliance with statutory code. Interprets code citations to ensure compliance. Performs marina/floating cabins electrical safety inspections.
  • Works within the CORE system to reassign inspections, reassign inspector queues, close out inspections, and customer coordination with results.
  • Remain compliant with all certification and continuing education requirements.
  • Conducts requested safety electrical inspections with tenants, owners, power distributers and other jurisdictions by identifying imminent safety hazards.
