About The Role
Under general supervision, the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Permitting Coordinator supports the implementation of South Carolina’s UST regulatory and compliance program. Working within the UST Management Division of the Bureau of Land and Waste Management, this position reviews permit applications, coordinates field activities, conducts compliance-related inspections, and provides guidance to contractors and facility owners. The coordinator ensures regulated UST activities adhere to federal and state requirements while maintaining accurate electronic records and supporting the overall effectiveness of the division.

About The Role
Under general supervision, the Underground Storage Tank (UST) Permitting Coordinator supports the implementation of South Carolina’s UST regulatory and compliance program. Job Responsibilities
- Review and issue permits for UST installation, operation, modification, and closure in accordance with state and federal regulations.
- Coordinate, schedule, and attend related field activities; conduct field inspections for UST facilities to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Serve as the back-up for financial responsibility reviews in support of the program’s fiscal analyst.
- Maintain accurate records and project files, including scanning and indexing documents into the electronic permitting system (E-Permitting).
- Review National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) requests for the Bureau of Land & Waste Management.
- Respond to inquiries, correspondence, and information requests from contractors, customers, and government partners.
- Provide daily customer service to contractors, facility owners, and internal stakeholders regarding permitting requirements and status updates.
- Apply regulatory guidance, SOPs, and agency policies to assigned tasks.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support program operations and regulatory compliance.

- Bachelor's degree in the natural or physical sciences* or related technical field; OR
- An associate degree in the natural or physical sciences* or related technical field and at least two (2) years of environmental health or related experience; OR
- High school diploma or GED and at least four (4) years of environmental health or related experience.

- Ability to read, interpret, and apply regulatory requirements and guidance documents.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills for working with internal staff, contractors, regulated facilities, and government officials.
- Demonstrated proficiency in writing, proofreading, organizing, and managing time effectively.
- Experience using electronic data systems and standard office software.
- Ability to perform fieldwork outdoors under varying environmental conditions and lift up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to exercise discretion within established procedures and SOPs.
- Occasional travel in-state and out-of-state; valid driver’s license, 10-year driving record that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines, and the ability to operate a state vehicle.
- Proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, etc.).
- Strong prioritization and time-management skills.
- Customer service experience, especially in a regulatory, permitting, or technical environment.
- Ability to deliver presentations, facilitate discussions, and communicate regulatory concepts clearly.
