Under limited supervision of a SC Licensed Psychiatrist,
- Provides advanced psychiatric/medical care for individuals and populations with complex nursing/medical and mental health needs.
- Works independently with minimal supervision providing diagnosis and treatment according to protocols.
- Establishes and monitors standards for clinical practice within SCDC.
- Uses prescriptive authority.
- Monitors medication.
- Conducts psychiatric assessments.
- Participates in treatment team and completes and records health histories of inmates.
- Conducts suicide/crisis intervention assessments.
- Performs all admissions procedures for a designated caseload of mentally ill patients, including appropriate family history and completes physical examination and completes psychiatric assessments.
- Distinguishes between normal and abnormal findings.
- Attends probate court hearings.
- Orders diagnostic testing as appropriate, including radiologic and lab studies; accurately interprets findings.

Graduation from an accredited school of nursing at the master's level or doctoral level acceptable to the board to include clinical experience.
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing at the master's level or doctoral level and certified as a nurse practitioner by the SC Board of Nursing or licensed in another state and eligible for licensure which must be obtained within 6 months of employment. Must have 3 years of active clinical practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Must have basic life support certification.
Correctional, community mental health center or emergency psychiatric care experience is strongly preferred.
