What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Manager position at State of South Carolina?
Reporting to the Department Chair of Chemistry, Geology, Physics and the Environment, the Operations Manager oversees all department operations, external relations and communications, procurement and budgets, chemical hygiene and laboratory safety compliance, facilities, recruitment, and grant administration and serves as department head in chair’s absence.
Manages daily operations in Sims Science Center, standing in for the Department Chair and program directors when they are unavailable.
Plans and executes strategies to achieve articulated department and program goals/projects.
Serves as the primary point of contact for approximately 30 faculty and staff members and multiple student organizations, directing them to necessary information/resources and logistical supports.
Manages external relations for the department:
communicates with other offices and on- and off-campus partners,
maintains social media sites and platforms,
maintains relationships with employment/internship partners,
assists with coordination of student recruitment and alumni tracking, and
assists with fundraising and events.
Maintains and oversees budgets and procurement, including annual expenditures for lab reagents, supplies and equipment.
Oversees department grants.
Hires temporary employees and administratively onboards new faculty and staff.
Hires, trains, mentors and evaluates the work of a full-time Laboratory Chemist and part-time Budget Manager.
Covers or coordinates coverage of their responsibilities during temporary absences.
Oversees Department chemical hygiene and laboratory safety compliance with federal and state regulations and Winthrop policies and procedures, including decisions by Winthrop EHS, the department Chemical Hygiene & Safety Coordinator and department Safety Committee.
Serves as Building Coordinator for Sims Science Center, overseeing upkeep and repair of classrooms and labs and managing interactions with Facilities Management.
Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or closely related field and at least four years of relevant experience. An advanced degree may be substituted for a portion of the experience.
Knowledge of the fundamental concepts of general and organic chemistry and familiarity with scientific instrumentation.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and ability to perform common spreadsheet/budget functions.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Effective organizational skills.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff and students in a team-oriented environment.
Ability to supervise staff and student employees.
Ability to work independently while managing multiple ongoing functions and priorities.
Able and willing to learn new things toward continuous improvement of workflows and processes.
