Job Responsibilities

Job Purpose

The Program Director for the Medical Lab Tech is responsible to the Dean of Health Sciences for the organization, administration, instruction, evaluation, continuous quality improvement, curriculum planning and development, direction of other program faculty/staff, and general effectiveness of the MLT program. In addition, this position will also be responsible for obtaining and maintaining NAACLS accreditation for the program.

Job Duties

Instructional Development

  • Work with members of the Advisory Committee to participate in planning for new and existing programs and courses.
  • Assist in the development of curricula for students in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.
  • Evaluate courses in the Medical Laboratory Technology curricula.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of curricula for Medical Laboratory Technology courses.

Teaching Performance

  • Teach courses as assigned and in accordance with the established syllabi.
  • Provide high quality instruction for students in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.
  • Evaluate the accomplishments of students on a regular basis.
  • Participate in the Faculty Performance Management System.
  • Achieve at least a 3.5 on student evaluations and satisfactory peer/supervisor evaluations.

Student Advisement

  • Work with the Student Services Division in the selection, recruitment, admission and retention of students and cooperate with the division to utilize counseling services.
  • Advise and maintain records of assigned student advisees in accordance with the School of Health Sciences and TCL policy and procedures.
  • Provide effective academic achievement for students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.
  • Maintain office hours as required and needed by students, faculty, and advisees.

Professional Development

  • Represent the School of Health Sciences and the College by participating in community and professional meetings.
  • Attend relevant professional meetings.
  • Maintain a current awareness of educational innovations and trends appropriate to Medical Laboratory Technology education.
  • Engage and complete the required minimal continuing professional development as required by NAACLS.

College/Community Service

  • Oversee activities related to compliance with the program specific accreditation criteria including the requirements set by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS).
  • Act as a liaison to communicate between the College and program specific accreditation committees including NAACLS.
  • Actively participate in activities to select, recruit, admit and retain students.
  • Maintain contacts with appropriate professional and community organizations/individuals in the college service area.
  • Serve actively on college committees.
  • Participate in School of Health Science’s meetings as assigned.
  • Participate in marketing activities for the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.
  • Work cooperatively with other School of Health Sciences faculty members and college departments to meet the educational needs of students.

Instructional Management

  • Maintain proper control and effective use of all physical facilities and supplies.
  • Prepare reports in cooperation with School of Health Sciences Dean for input into the planning/reporting system.
  • Develop and administer student regulations within the program and school in a fair and equitable manner.
  • Ensure communication of policies, procedures, and campus information to all students.
  • Perform additional duties, as assigned by the School of Health Sciences Dean.
  • Maintain standards applicable for program accreditation.
  • Review and approve purchase requests prior to submission to the dean.
  • Oversee Medical Laboratory Technology class schedule preparation.
  • Prepare budgets in cooperation with School of Health Sciences Dean.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

Must possess an earned master's or doctoral degree and hold ASCP-BOC or ASCPi-BOC generalist certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist/Medical Technologist. The program director must also have three years of teaching experience, along with knowledge of educational methods and administration, as well as current NAACLS accreditation procedures.
