At Richland Maintenance, assists in the operation of heavy equipment (combination front-end loader and backhoe, asphalt distributer, etc.). Repairs potholes and base surface failures of roadway using hand tools such as shovel, pick, rake and asphalt lute to level asphalt as needed. Operates a tri-axle 16 cu. yd. dump truck to haul hot mix from the asphalt plant to the paving machine in a safe manner. Hauls other materials as needed, such as limestone, dirt and soil to various locations. Performs daily inspections on equipment to ensure equipment is in top running order and fully functional to handle the job requirement. Coordinates the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide to warn motorists. Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, to include operating medium or heavy duty equipnment. May include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts. Conducts and document pre-operation vehicle or equipment inspection. Operates sprayer, spraying tack ahead of paver in paving operations. Operates self-propelled steel wheel and pneumatic rollers to compact and solidify fill material.
