Job Opening

We have a great career opportunity available for a Federal Documents Librarian in our Columbia, South Carolina headquarters.

Under general supervision of the Director of Library Collections and Services, receives, processes, and copy catalogs federal government publications and manages acquires, and processes print serials.

The candidate must have excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact courteously and effectively with internal and external customers. They should have excellent organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to handle multiple projects and meet deadlines under limited supervision. They must have the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of staff and management.

Major Responsibilities

  • Conduct all tasks required by role as FDLP Coordinator. Review, evaluate, and maintain depository selection profile of Federal Documents received from GPO. Complete requested depository surveys. Actively participate in FDLP community professional conferences and trainings.
  • Receive and process shipments of Federal print documents from the FDLP. Process monthly electronic record file upload.
  • Accurately perform MARC copy cataloging of new and historical print Federal documents and add holdings records in local catalog using OCLC, Sirsi ILS, and following the SuDoc classification system.
  • Monitor FDLP Needs & Offers lists and request appropriate offerings for South Carolina-related Federal publications that fit collection parameters.
  • Maintain GPO Preservation Steward collections and collaborate closely with GPO to maintain these collections, fill in gaps in historical collections, and maintain inventories.
  • Perform regular collection maintenance of physical Federal documents collection in a variety of formats including published reports, maps, posters, microfilm, and microfiche.
  • Actively promote and highlight the Federal documents collection through monthly themes, monthly displays, library newsletters, and social media; assist in the development and implementation of public programs that promote FDLP at the State Library.
  • Represent the State Library and participate on committees, in professional organizations, and at conferences.

Minimum And Additional Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in library science, information science or related field and experience in library systems and operations.
  • Ability to lift and move materials, bending and reaching to perform regular collection maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A master’s degree in library science from a college or university accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).
  • 3 years professional library experience.
  • Experience working with government documents.
  • Knowledge of library classification systems and standard cataloging rules.
  • Knowledge of Marc and RDA copy cataloging.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.

Additional Comments

Work takes place in an office environment. Overnight travel is not expected for this position, however may be occasionally necessary. Some local travel is expected. Occasional work on evenings and weekends.
