Employee Relations
- Helps administrators, supervisors and employees create and maintain positive work environments.
- Provides guidance and counsel to supervisors seeking to resolve performance and disciplinary issues, including drafting and reviewing written documentation, assisting with the progressive discipline process, and providing guidance to employees on the grievance process.
- Investigates and documents employee and supervisor complaints regarding general employee relations issues and unlawful discrimination and prepares reports with recommendations.
- Collaborates with the university’s Title IX Coordinator on complaints of sexual harassment involving employees.
- Coordinates the exit survey process and provides an annual analysis of responses.
- Manages unemployment claims and responds to subpoenas requesting employment-related information.
- Oversees day-to-day benefits and training operations and ensures compliance with applicable laws and regulations and state and Winthrop policies and procedures.
- Hires, trains, mentors and evaluates an Office Coordinator, Benefits Administrator, Benefits Assistant and HR Generalist/Training Coordinator.
- Manages the Employee Performance Management System (EPMS) process for staff and the review processes for faculty, administrators and Athletics.
- Follows up with supervisors to ensure evaluations are completed by the established deadlines.
- Provides guidance to supervisors on creating success criteria and completing evaluations.
- Oversees the substandard performance process.
- Collaborates with HR staff to manage the technical aspects of the various performance processes and ensure compliance with state and Winthrop policies and serves as backup to resolve technical issues.
- Develops and administers in-person and online training programs on performance evaluation, Title VII, supervisory techniques, disciplinary management, FMLA/ADA, harassment and discrimination; manages online programs provided by outside vendors.
- Collaborates with the HR Generalist/Training Coordinator and other HR staff developing training presentations.
- Recommends and oversees implementation of content for the university’s mandatory annual online harassment and discrimination training and works closely with HR staff responsible for monitoring, reporting and delivery.
- Serves as liaison to the EAP vendor to plan and deliver on-campus and/or online programming and coordinate special employee services as needed.
- Works with supervisor to negotiate costs and services.
- Manages the procurement process for securing other external vendors; ensures timely payment of related invoices; and coordinates with vendors to resolve technical issues and ensure the program/platform is functional.
- Develops and maintains analytical reports pertaining to assigned programs.
- Coordinates and oversees implementation of the Employee Satisfaction survey.
- Works with Benefits staff to develop benefits-related processes and procedures that align with the Winthrop mission, vision and strategic plan.
- Provides guidance and counsel to Benefits staff on retirement and insurance issues, programming and problem resolution.
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources or related field.
- Three years of human resources experience.
- Experience conducting complex/sensitive investigations into unlawful discrimination and harassment claims.
- Experience working with supervisors to resolve performance and discipline concerns.
- Experience drafting formal written communication.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Working knowledge of the principles and best practices associated with employee relations and developing and maintaining positive, productive work environments.
- Expert knowledge of EEO, Title VII, FLSA, FMLA and ADA regulations and legal issues.
- Expert knowledge of Title IX and associated legal issues or ability to learn.
- Knowledge of South Carolina HR laws, regulations, policies and processes or ability to learn.
- Effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to draft and edit formal communications.
- Exceptional organizational and time-management skills and ability to maintain attention to detail and meet deadlines while juggling multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Effective interview, investigative and analytical skills.
- Ability to develop and deliver training programs online and in person.
