Description of Work

Employee is responsible for operating a tractor-trailer unit for the purpose of making deliveries and pick-ups throughout North Carolina. Responsible for independently operating a tractor-trailer in a safe and efficient manner; obeying all federal, state and departmental transportation and traffic rules and regulations; and adhering to the designated routes and delivery schedules. Duties include overseeing and participating in the loading, security and unloading of materials; checking quantities and items against delivery tickets; completing all necessary paperwork; performing routine maintenance evaluations and service on the tractor-trailers; and as required, performing any warehouse related tasks or other assigned duties.

Essential job functions include operate large vehicle (tractor-trailer) for extended periods in varied road, weather and traffic conditions, during various times of day in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations. Communicate effectively with staff, offenders and customers regarding the loading and delivery of products, maintain security of vehicle and cargo, and ensure that cargo is delivered in good condition and in a timely manner.

This position REQUIRES a valid and current North Carolina Class A License, pre-employment drug testing and driving record background check (driving record may be attached to application). Must have graduated from High School and a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the operation of a tractor-trailer unit transporting goods and equipment; or certification from a recognized tractor-trailer unit transporting goods and equipment; or certification from a recognized tractor-trailer driving school and one (1) year of experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a current and valid North Carolina Class A CDL License. Degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Management Preferences

  • Documented working experience of operating large vehicle (tractor-trailor) for extended periods in varied road, weather and traffic conditions, during various times of day in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of accepted practices, principles, methods, and procedures of commercial Transporation.
  • Valid and current North Carolina Class A CDL License, pre-employment drug testing, driving record background check (must attach your driving record to your application.
  • Experience in the operation of forklifts.

Minimum Education And Experience Requirements

Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes State Prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as the division of Community Supervision. Other divisions include Administration, Compliance & Accreditation, Comprehensive Health Services, Internal Affairs & Intelligence Operations, Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission, and Rehabilitation & Reentry.

The Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) serves as the NCDAC Capital Project Coordinator (CPC) and is tasked with coordinating all capital improvement, new construction, renovation, and repair projects with the State Construction Office (SCO). DECM also acts as the DAC representative on matters involving the State Property Office and State Building Commission. Our unified purpose is to provide architectural and engineering support, sustainability, efficiency, and resiliency planning, as well as construction and maintenance services. This ensures that all statewide Institutions and Facilities comply with building codes, regulations, and legislative mandates while promoting the agency’s rehabilitation and reentry goals through offender job training in the construction and maintenance trades.

We support the Institutions and Facilities directly and indirectly by installing and maintaining kitchen, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and electronics equipment. The DECM-Engineering team consists of experts in architectural and engineering design, property services, project management, and sustainability, efficiency, and resiliency (SE&R). These services support new construction, renovation, and like-in-kind and upgrade maintenance repairs to the agency’s physical plant while ensuring compliance with the NCDOA State Construction Office.

Through valuable rehabilitation and training for offenders, we aim to improve recidivism rates. DECM-Construction undertakes construction, renovation, and major maintenance projects that involve longer periods of resource allocation with a focus on enhancing the department's infrastructure assets. DECM-Maintenance, which encompasses the Mountain Regional Yard, Piedmont Regional Yard, Coastal Regional Yard, and three Satellite Yards, provides essential plumbing, HVAC/R, and electrical preventative, prescriptive, and routine maintenance services to all Institutions and Facilities. Additionally, our maintenance efforts include specific areas such as telecommunications, electronic intrusion systems (EIS), fencing, cameras, fire alarms, and energy management systems, all focused on maintaining the Department’s infrastructure assets.

DAC uses the Merit-Based Recruitment and Selection Plan to fill positions subject to the State Human Resources Act with the most qualified individuals. Hiring salary will be based on relevant qualifications, internal equity, and budgetary considerations pertinent to the advertised position.
