Work is related to the maintenance repair and construction of State-Owned bridges, culverts, and pipes within Division 1. The position will report to the Creswell Bridge Maintenance office located in Creswell, North Carolina. Position is technical in nature and labor intensive. The employee will be required to work in diverse working environments in all types of weather conditions. The employee will work in and around heavy traffic, near heavy equipment, and with power tools. The employee must be able to work in a close team environment or independently, as needed. The employee could possibly be exposed to briars, poisonous plants, spiders, and snakes when working around or under bridges. When traffic volumes dictate, the employee may be required to work at night or on weekends. When inclement weather occurs, the employee may be called upon to work nights and/or weekends to help in the snow and ice removal process.
Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:
- Experience in Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
- Experience supervising and training others in equipment operations
- Working experience as the Lead Worker on a Bridge Crew without supervision
- Experience reading and interpreting plans, calculating quantities and placing orders, plan reading and layout, directing, drilling, cutting of holes, and directing of erection of steel beams and bridge components
- Experience serving as a lead in trenching and shoring operations
Additional Expectations:
The employee must be able to legally operate a state vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. The employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather. Position will require climbing, bending, and walking on uneven terrain. May require work during non-traditional work hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, and times of emergency.

High School or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Necessary Special Requirements:
