In this position, you will function as a Transportation Worker III in the Columbus County Maintenance Unit. Your work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair and construction of state-maintained roads and roadside feature. Work to include, but not limited to, installation of traffic & erosion control devices, clearing of right of way, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage tasks, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed. Emergency response includes traffic accident clean-up, snow and ice removal, and other emergencies as they occur. You will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, motor grader, roller, and additional pieces of heavy equipment as needed. In this position, you will be subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances. Â You must have the ability to act upon both verbal and written communication. May perform a variety of other assigned duties. Employee in this position must have working knowledge of the principals involved in the operation and use of the equipment to which it is assigned. Ability to perform assigned tasks and to follow oral and written instructions as directed by Supervisor.
Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Employee must have the ability to climb, bend, traverse steep and uneven terrain, and work in extreme temperature conditions. Ability to work in close proximity of high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Â Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Â As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Employee must have the ability to lift and carry 50lbs.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

- Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practicesÂ
- Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching
- Experience in snow and ice removal operations
- Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer or sweeper.
