THE STARTING SALARY IS LIMITED TO $70,000. Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidate's education and experience related to the position, as well as our agency budget and equity.
The Press Secretary will be a member of the Department of Justice’s communications team, reporting to the Communications Director and supporting the team’s efforts to communicate the work of the department and the Attorney General to serve the people of North Carolina.
DOJ’s communications team works to communicate the work of the department and the Attorney General to serve the people of North Carolina. We work with media and use digital and social media platforms to educate North Carolinians about efforts to safeguard their rights, prevent and respond to scams, and protect our communities and resources. The office also works to ensure that public information about the office is accurate and up to date.
Communications and press management
This position will support the Department's Communications and press management. Communications and press management support will include:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, public affairs, media, journalism, English, or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of experience in communications, public relations, or publicity work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Press Secretary will be a member of the Department of Justice’s communications team, reporting to the Communications Director and supporting the team’s efforts to communicate the work of the department and the Attorney General to serve the people of North Carolina.

We work with media and use digital and social media platforms to educate North Carolinians about efforts to safeguard their rights, prevent and respond to scams, and protect our communities and resources. The office also works to ensure that public information about the office is accurate and up to date.
Communications and press management
This position will support the Department's Communications and press management. Communications and press management support will include:
- Hire and manage the communications team interns
- Review and provide feedback on drafts of briefing documents and communications team deliverables from the press assistant and other members of the attorney general’s team
- Work closely with the attorney general, chief deputy attorney general, chief of staff, and communications director to finalize press statements on behalf of the office and the attorney general and prepare the attorney general for public events and interviews
- Draft and circulate press deliverables for approval, including press releases, statements, and interview talking points
- Work closely with the consumer protection director, the civil bureau chief, and the criminal bureau chief to highlight the work of the office to defend our clients and protect North Carolinians.
- Serve as day-to-day point of contact for media requests for information and interviews and serve as the on-the-record spokesperson for the office
- Manage response to public records requests from the media, in coordination with the general counsel’s office
- Plan and manage logistics for press conference, interviews, and events with the attorney general
- Draft and send consumer alerts
- Draft internal emails on behalf of the attorney general and office leadership
- Work with the office’s Public Protection Section on public-focused outreach and initiatives
- Ensure that all content is accurate, grammatically correct, spelled correctly, and meets AP standards
- Review and approve editorial calendar and social media content
- Review and approve photos and videos before posting and assist with video and photo editing
- Plan rollout of office initiatives and campaigns on social and digital media
- Execute paid media efforts
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
- Strong analytical and communication skills, both verbal and written, demonstrating ability to express opinions, proactively address problems, and work through conflict in a constructive manner.
- Ability to communicate effectively to the public via email, over the telephone, and in person, and ability to develop basic understanding of North Carolina law.
- Strong grammar and spelling skills that meet AP standards
- Ability to work on tight deadlines and respond to media requests
- Highly organized with demonstrated ability to work independently, manage time, evaluate progress, and adjust activities to complete projects within established timeframes.
