This temporary position is located in Raleigh - Wake County.

Job Order Hourly Rate of Pay: $25.18 (Based on education and/or years of relevant work experience reflected on the application).

This temporary position will be assigned to the Department of Health and Human Services. This position is located at 4312 District Dr, Raleigh, NC 27607.

The Duties Of This Position Include

Medicolegal Death Investigations – Provide medicolegal death investigation expertise and guidance. Responds to active death scenes, receives calls of death from varying sources, including local medical examiners, hospitals, funeral homes, and law enforcement, and properly documents and reports the cases in the North Carolina medical examiner system. Assists law enforcement, emergency medical services, and others on active death scenes with the proper handling of evidence related to the death, such as guns, knives, and ligatures. Ensures these items are properly packaged and handled. Assists with determining the medical examiner's jurisdiction of cases and the cause and manner of death. Assists in the investigations of deaths by working with appropriate law enforcement and other agencies. Facilitates communication between the medical examiner’s office and outside agencies. Educates and trains local medical examiners, physicians, and others regarding medical examiner jurisdiction, death certificates, and cause and manner of death. Supports other units at the OCME by providing additional investigatory information and finding/researching how to obtain relevant records for a death investigation pursuant to North Carolina state statutes. Assists with identifying unidentified individuals through scientific methods such as fingerprinting and DNA. Assists with the research to find next of kin, outreach to any known next of kin, and the final disposition of all unclaimed decedents in the state of North Carolina. Serves as the OCME evidence custodian, responsible for the intake, inventory, and release of any evidence collected at the OCME. May assist with emergency mass fatality events by responding to scenes, coordinating statewide responses, and receiving calls of death from across the state. May testify in court regarding medicolegal death investigations and evidence.

Postmortem Examinations – Independently examine decedents at an active death scene to include the interpretation of injury, the identification of postmortem changes, any evidence of drug abuse/use, and the presence of natural disease. Perform additional full-body or dental radiography procedures to assist in the identification of decedents. May be asked to assist with external examinations of decedents, including photography, evidence collection, toxicological specimen collection, documentation of injuries, personal effects, and evidence, and proper submission of reports and paperwork.

Training/Outreach – Provides training and expertise about medicolegal death investigations and procedures to pathologists (including residents and fellows), medical examiners, law enforcement personnel, medical/dental students, other medical professionals, and college and high school students. These areas include medicolegal jurisdiction, identification techniques, death scene documentation, scene recovery, and the application of forensic sciences to medicolegal death investigation. Assist with training new team members.

Bachelor’s degree in science (biology, chemistry, physiology, criminal justice, anthropology, forensic sciences, biochemistry, etc.) or related field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of medicolegal death investigation experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
