Primary Purpose Of Position

The North Carolina Museum of Art is seeking an enthusiastic team member to be part of our wonderful organization! The Installation Technician handles, installs, packs, and transports art from the Museum’s collection and all work on loan to the Museum. This position is responsible for preparing works for hanging or storage with minimal risk to the object. This position will also work with artwork and art movements in the Museum Park, working with the Director of Art Services and Installation and the Conservation department to develop and implement clear maintenance plans for art objects in the park.

Key Responsibilities Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Working with the Director of Art Services and Installation to manage object installations and deinstallations of permanent collection objects, loans to the collection, and outgoing loans from the collection.\
  • Collaborating within Art Services and Conservation department to implement weekly maintenance schedules for objects in the Museum Park, including a weekly inspection and condition reporting.
  • Overseeing the maintenance of natural growth within a 1-foot radius of most objects in the park and maintaining monthly cleanings and documentation of damages to objects in the park.
  • Determining equipment needs, crating, storing, and safe handling of artworks.
  • Partnering with the Registration department to coordinate receiving, unpacking, and returning of art objects.
  • Working with Art Handling colleagues on the installation and deinstallation of 2D and 3D works of art at the NC Museum of Art, the NC Museum of Art Park, the NC Museum of Art Winston-Salem, and other museums, galleries, and private lenders’ homes and offices as required.
  • Judging the most appropriate hardware for the security of the artwork.
  • Participating in the proper loading of art objects into trucks and ensuring the safe transit and delivery in the Museum’s custom art delivery truck.
  • Managing the art storage areas by working with supervisor and Collections Management Department to provide a safe, clean, and secure environment for works of art.
  • Serving as a courier for loaned works of art both nationally and internationally as needed.
  • Tracking art movements in TMS software.
  • Mounting, matting, and/or framing objects as assigned.
  • Judging risk and effectively minimize the danger to valuable art.

Position/Physical Requirements:

  • Typically work schedule is Monday – Friday, 40 hours, some weekend work necessary.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment. (new standard)
  • Must be able to lift and move up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have ability to work at heights up to 50 feet in a motorized personnel lift and up to 18 feet on a ladder with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must have ability to drive and oversee the transport of works of art in the Museum’s art truck with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Boom, fork, and lift training will be required.

Management Prefers

The North Carolina Museum of Art is a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The statutory purpose of the museum is to acquire, preserve, and exhibit works of art for the education and enjoyment of the people of the State, and to conduct programs of education, research and publication designed to encourage an interest in and an appreciation of art on the part of the people of the state.
