Responsibilities

This position is located at Bertie Correctional Institution in Windsor, North Carolina.  This position reports to the Correctional Housing Unit Manager II and is responsible for first line supervision of Correctional Officer II's at a multi custody correctional facility. This position's responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assigning lower-level custody staff to a particular area or post and evaluating/overseeing officer activities and performance and ensuring that the custody, security, and welfare of offenders is maintained.
  • Coordinating work schedules to ensure shift coverage, implementing operational procedures and ensuring rules and regulations are followed according to policy.
  • Managing the facility on occasion of being the highest-ranking custody staff on the premises or the Officer-in-Charge (OIC) as needed.
  • Ensuring that staff are fully trained, and that proper conduct, actions, and procedures are being followed.
  • Maintaining facility security through regular inspections to ensure compliance with governing regulations and standards relating to facility maintenance, health, and safety of offenders.Â
  • Communicating effective instruction/direction during drills, searches, and in emergencies situations.
  • Responding to emergency situations such as distress codes, escapes, and transportation of offenders.Â
  • Conducting and/or supervising searches of offenders, offender living areas and work areas for contraband.
  • Investigating and taking action when appropriate regarding security issues, incidents, disputes, and complaints.
  • Preparing/reviewing reports and completing performance evaluations on subordinate staff.

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits.Â

"As of January 1, 2025, there are new increase adjustments to the state's pay plans which were approved by the State Human Resources Commission, effective January 1, 2025. The new salary range(s) will be $37,782. - $66,120." Prior applicants will remain under consideration and do not need to reapply.

Management Preference: Â "Prisons' Eastern Region prefers candidates with no less than 2 years as a Correctional Officer".

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years six months of experience as a Correctional Officer, or two years of experience as Correctional Officer II; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualifications Must be eligible for certification by the N.C. Criminal Justice Education and Training and Standards Commission.
