It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Other divisions include Administration, Health Services, Rehabilitation & Reentry, Special Operations and the Post-Release Supervision & Parole Commission. We have a mission that matters!

Description of Work

Reporting directly to the Diagnostic Center Director at a multi-custody male correctional facility, this position works in the Diagnostics Department. Job responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Performing initial interviewing and processing of offenders sentenced to prison.

2. Gathering socioeconomic information, education, substance abuse history, explaining terms of the sentence, and providing general orientation to processes and procedures.

3. Recording data and maintaining all offender records.

4. Conducting offender orientation classes on a regular basis.

5. Obtaining information from offenders once they have been admitted including interviewing and entering information into the OPUS system from the commitment and a variety of personal background documents and interviews.

6. Employing various approaches that must be taken with different offenders in order to ensure collection of necessary data.

7. Making recommendations to a supervisor from the information gathered during the admission process.

8. Communicating clearly with offenders who may be difficult to communicate with and who may not understand why information is being asked and/or may have difficulty providing responses.

9. Explaining policies, practices, and procedures, as well as answering basic questions a new offender may have regarding what to expect during his commitment.

10. Creating and maintaining a variety of files in both electronic and hard copy format to include, but is not limited to, offender records, reports, memorandums, policies, orientation materials and statistics, and general correspondences.



(Salary Range: $31,200 - $49,340)

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Effective July 1, 2025, candidates now must meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the " Minimum Education and Experience " listed from the OSHR class specification as seen in the next section below. This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits with established working hours and may require working beyond normal work schedule to meet business need.

Note to Current State Employees :
The salary grade for this position is NC02 . State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected for this position, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity. Based upon these factors, a pay increase MAY result.

About Central Prison :

Central Prison in Raleigh, NC has been in continuous service since 1884. It serves as the admission point into prison for adult male felons sentenced to 20 years or more and is the main medical and mental health center for male offenders. It also houses special populations, including death row and safe-keepers.


While security requires that certain offenders remain in their cells, there are more than 260 offender job assignments that include working in the kitchen, laundry or canteen. Offenders also work as barbers, janitors and clerks. Offenders can attend substance abuse group therapy meetings, Bible studies or worship services.

Minimum Education and Experience

High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma AND one year of correctional or human services experience ; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
