The position is a Charge/Lead Nurse located at Maury Correctional Institution in Hookerton, which houses approximately 1504 of medium, and close custody male offenders.

The position provides professional nursing care/treatment to patients in accordance with medical protocols in a supervisory capacity. Employees in this role are responsible for managing and supervising daily nursing care on an assigned shift or assigned area, or in a preceptor role, coordinating all licensed and non-licensed staff. Work includes conducting needs assessments; developing, implementing, and evaluating treatment plans; and providing patient care and education to offenders in a state correctional facility. Position requires sick call assessments, medication administration, phlebotomy sticks, transcribing MD/PA orders, patient education, thorough medical documentation, monitoring/treatment of communicable diseases, and responding to emergencies.

The position will be the Charge/Lead RN. The RN may be required to work any shift, based on the institution's current needs, including weekends and holidays, with limited clinical supervision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


  • Documented experience in the administration and interpretation of psychological test

  • Demonstrated experience in interpretive therapy and behavior modification

  • Demonstrated experience in interpreting diagnostic findings and preparing reports

  • Documented experience in determining and conducting appropriate therapy

Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina and one year of nursing experience.

The team of physicians, nurses, behavioral health services, dental services, psychiatric services, pharmacy services, and licensed healthcare administration services work together to provide emergent, acute, routine, and chronic health care, as well as preventive medicine at all prison facilities. They also coordinate with specialists and other clinical consultants outside of prisons throughout the state to ensure comprehensive health and well-being towards a safe transition from prison, improving public health, and decreasing recidivism.
