Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Special Education Assistant position at the New York State School for the Deaf. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school’s education or residential programs. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following: • Work with individual students or groups of students on special instructional projects;• Provide supervision, and guidance to students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;• Escort students to various classes on and off campus; • Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor; and• Directly supervise students and assist in related instructional work as required.

Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Candidates must have a High School diploma or a High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND possess a New York State certification as a Teaching Assistant, or be able to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment. Continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining the appropriate level of New York State Teaching Assistant certificate. For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position.
