Duties Description The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for a Museum Scientist 4 position in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of a Museum Scientist 5 or higher, the incumbent will serve as the curator of Historical Archaeology for the Anthropology Department. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Conducts empirically grounded, independent field and laboratory research on the historical archaeology of New York, designing research strategies that meet the highest professional standards. The incumbent is expected to incorporate the Museum's historical archaeology collections into this research;
  • Curates the Museum's historical archaeology collection, maintaining and building its intellectual integrity, expanding its holdings according to Museum and disciplinary standards, and ensuring proper physical care;
  • May supervise lower-level Museum Scientists, collections technicians, interns, volunteers, and students in curatorial and collections management tasks;
  • Prepares research findings for professional conferences, public and educational programming, and for publication as peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, monographs, and/or books.
  • Seeks and oversees development of competitive grants and other outside funding to support research, curatorial, and educational programs in their area of study;
  • Participates in developing public and educational programs that meet the Museum's internal and community-oriented goals, including the Anthropology Workshop for K-12 teachers and administrators, and may lead their implementation;
  • Develop and deliver public programs to the Museum's diverse audiences, as assigned, that may relate to current exhibitions or ongoing research. These may include gallery talks, public lectures, guided tours, or hands-on activities, with a focus on engaging family-based audiences, such as the Rock & Fossil Fun Fair, Women of Science Program, various Teacher’s Workshops, and other programs run in collaboration with the Museum Education Office;
  • Participates in the development of exhibitions pertaining to the archaeology collections of the New York State Museum.

Minimum Qualifications Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must meet ONE of the following criteria:
1. A bachelor’s degree AND five years of professional experience OR
2. A master’s degree AND four years of professional experience OR
3. A doctoral degree and two years of professional experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Preference may be given to candidates who have:
  • Ph.D. in archaeology, with experience in New York historical archaeology.
  • Experience with curating a museum collection in historical archaeology.
  • Experience conducting fieldwork in historical archaeology
  • Experience in developing and producing museum exhibitions and public programs in historical archaeology
Additional Comments CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This will be a permanent, non-competitive appointment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and experience will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $131,665 based on annual performance advances.

This position will require 30% in-state/Statewide travel.
