Why does the job exist?
The State Benefits Eligibility Interviewer is a position that reviews applications for state benefits utilizing the state laws and regulations and follows the internal controls to evaluate veterans' and their eligible dependents qualifications and eligibility to receive state benefits which include: tax exemptions, tax waivers, specialty license plates with the NM Department of Motor Vehicle, Game and Fishing licenses, educational scholarships, and park passes through the Department of Cultural Affairs.
How does it get done?
Administrative Tasks:
Eligibility Interviewer will meet guest to the NMDVS Santa Fe office, and will be responsible for tracking request that come via walk-ins and scheduled appointments. The information is kept in a database and will update as needed. This position will also send notifications to veterans and eligible dependents when they do not qualify for benefits and will provide notifications of when additional information is required to complete the application process.
Eligibility Interviewing:
This position will utilize state laws and regulations to review and evaluate applications to determine eligibility for benefits. Employee will document the information in the NMDVS computer system and will generate the necessary certification of eligibility. Employee will verify all supporting documentation for eligibility and will serve as an advocate for veterans when additional external services//benefits are needed.

This position serves the State of New Mexico's veterans and their eligible dependents, and the NM Department of Veterans Services.

Minimum Qualification
High School diploma or Equivalent and two (2) years of women, infant, and children (WIC) experience, customer service, office administration, or government assistance programs such as welfare, unemployment benefits, social security benefits and/or public housing. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling two (2) years may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
This position will be required to travel for outreach events. Some events are held on military installations and the employee will be required to gain access to these military installations.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required.
