Why does the job exist?

The Occupational Health and Safety Bureau (OHSB) works to achieve its mission through various means. By accomplishing its mission OHSB saves lives, enhances the quality of life of New Mexico's working men and women, and contributes to the economic vitality of the State. The Safety Consultant evaluates a company's Safety programs and practices and identifies areas of non-compliance with OSHA standards. The Safety Consultant assists businesses with development and training of effective safety programs to help foster a positive safety culture in the workplace.
How does it get done?

  • Perform on-site safety consultation visits, presentations, training, and technical assistance
  • Promote safety programs and services
  • Prepare timely, accurate, and technically correct documentation, correspondence, written reports, and case files
  • Enter data and information into tracking and information systems
  • Ensure activity due dates are tracked and met, and all required documentation is maintained in records and files
  • Identify potential safety hazards in the workplace

  • Occasional contact with external Federal, State and Local regulatory bodies as well as contractors and environmental not for profit organizations

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, industrial hygiene, engineering, physical science, natural science, environmental science, social science, criminology, or closely related field and two (2) years of related work experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage under sometimes stressful situations. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required. Significant in-state travel for on-site consultations, with occasional out-of-state travel for training or site visits. Work may involve extended standing/walking and potential exposure to chemicals, noise, extreme weather, and other safety hazards.
