Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services.
The Museum of Indian Art and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology (MIAC/LOA), a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs, is part of the Museum of New Mexico system. With a mission to serve as a center of stewardship, knowledge, and understanding of the artistic, cultural, and intellectual achievements of the diverse peoples of the Native Southwest; MIAC/LOA includes the Museum and collections, Laboratory of Anthropology Library, archives, and the archaeological research collection, which is housed at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology.
Why does the job exist?
This position exists to document, care for, and provide access to the publications and other textual and digital resources held by the non-circulating special collections library at LOA. The Librarian provides research and reference support to staff, scholars, tribes, and the public; connecting them to knowledge and resources about Southwestern archaeology, anthropology, and the art, history, and cultures of the Native peoples of New Mexico and the Greater Southwest region.
How does it get done?
This position:
1) Facilitates access to LOA Library collection resources through electronic, phone, and in-person service.
2) Manages the Library's database/catalog, online presence, and the interface with the State Library personnel and consortium
2) Catalogs new and donated materials using current cataloging standards while maintaining existing classification systems.
3) Recommends new acquisitions and acceptance of donated materials to the staff collections committee.
4) Evaluates and weeds the collection and makes recommendations to the staff collections committee for removal, transfer, or restriction in compliance with NAGPRA.
5) Trains and oversees Library volunteers and any contract staff.
6) Supports and enhances MIAC exhibits and programs through participation in relevant committee meetings, research assistance, presentations, and the provision of complementary resources in the Reading Room.

Members of the public include casual researchers and visitors interested in the Laboratory of Anthropology and its history

Minimum Qualification
Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association (or recognized by the appropriate body of another country).
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with extensive personal computer, phone, printer, scanner, and other technology usage. There will be extended periods of sitting along with some standing. Must be able to lift up to 25lbs.
