The Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA) shapes a humane world by connecting people through creative expression and artistic traditions. The Museum's holdings represent diverse cultures and constitute the largest collection of international folk art in the world. The core collection donated by Museum founder Florence Dibell Bartlett and representing 34 countries has grown to a collection of over 163,000 objects from more than 130 countries. MOIFA offers dynamic exhibitions, programs, and publications that appeal to diverse learning styles and audiences, touch the heart, engage the mind, and inspire action. We create accessible exhibitions, programming, and resources that serve the global community, including multiple perspectives that encourage further exploration of wide-ranging subjects.
Why does the job exist?
As the chief operating officer, the deputy director oversees all operations at the MOIFA, including human, financial, and physical resources. Daily oversight of Museum operations by the deputy director directly impacts all facets of the Museum's mission. Responsibilities span a wide range of activities, including strategic planning, budgeting preparation, preservation of and access to collections, visitor services, staff personnel policies, and financial backup and management of facilities maintenance and repairs. The deputy director represents the Museum in the executive director's absence and as delegated by the executive director with all constituencies affiliated with the Museum.

Museum Operations and Administration
This position serves Museum visitors, Museum staff, members, supporters, partners, friends, citizens of the state of New Mexico, with particular attention to underserved communities within our state, to help them connect with folk art traditions, including their own, as well as our national and international community of artists and institutional collaborators.
Ideal Candidate
This position serves Museum visitors, Museum staff, members, supporters, partners, friends, citizens of the state of New Mexico, with particular attention to underserved communities within our state, to help them connect with folk art traditions, including their own, as well as our national and international community of artists and institutional collaborators.
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field of study from an accredited college or university and nine (9) years of professional level experience operating within parameters and guidelines directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling thirteen (13) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include supervisory and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting within a public museum with exposure to Visual/Video display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and computer usage. Weekend and evening work attending public programs and related events may be required.

Key Responsibilities
Museum Operations and Administration
- Assists the Executive Director in the overall administration and daily operations of the Museum.
- Oversees facilities operations, security, emergency preparedness, health and safety, and building management.
- Supervises assigned staff; develops work plans, evaluates performance, and ensures compliance with State Personnel Rules.
- Leads operational planning, policy development, and cross-divisional projects.
- Serves as the Museum's owner representative for capital, construction, facilities, exhibition, collections, and security projects.
- Assists with strategic planning, capital improvement initiatives, and operational resource management.
- Serves as principal backup to the Executive Director, ensuring continuity of leadership and operations.
- Represents the Museum with Department of Cultural Affairs leadership, governing boards, partner organizations, donors, and the public.
- Assists with strategic initiatives, special projects, contracts, and executive-level decision making.
- Coordinates with the Executive Director to ensure alignment with organizational priorities and strategic goals.
- Assists with budget development, financial oversight, and fiscal administration.
- Provides leadership and backup support for finance, human resources, procurement, contracts, and personnel actions.
- Oversees grant administration, compliance, reporting, and financial coordination.
- Develops and improves administrative procedures, financial protocols, and operational processes.
- Monitors expenditures and resource utilization, ensuring compliance with state policies and organizational objectives.
- Supports conflict resolution, organizational effectiveness, and continuous improvement initiatives.
