TRAINING SPECIALIST - UNCLASSIFIED

This position is responsible for assisting the Training Division of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) in researching, developing, updating and delivering POST approved curriculum for Basic and Advanced law enforcement training to ensure all POST training is in keeping with legal requirements, best practices and industry standards.  These duties are a critical part of the overall mission of Nevada POST. Prior successful employment as a full-time peace officer equivalent to a Nevada Category I or II officer. 

The ideal candidate would have a bachelor’s degree in a criminal justice related field, with diverse assignments while working as a peace officer to include patrol, investigations, training and supervision. A combination of experience, training and education may be used in lieu of above that demonstrate the necessary qualifications. Persons offered employment in this position must submit to a pre-employment background check. 

Physical demands: This position may require the applicant to participate in and instruct physical fitness sessions as needed. Applicants may be administered the POST Physical Readiness Test (PPRT) for category I peace officers as part of the interview process. The standards for the PPRT are:

1. Vertical Jump of not less than 14 inches 
2. Agility Run in not more than 19.5 seconds 
3. 30 sit-ups in one minute 
4. 23 push-ups, no time limit 
5. 300 meter sprint in not more than 68 seconds 
6. 1.5 mile run in not more than 16 minutes 57 seconds

Include but not limited to the following: Develop and evaluate lesson plans and curriculum that address NAC mandates for Nevada peace officers, supervise and evaluate instructors for content and performance, coordinate and schedule training areas and training resources, develop and instruct specialized and advanced courses that enhance the basic curriculum, and communicate effectively both written and orally. Develop and instruct specialized and advanced courses relevant to professional development, management and supervision. Research and make recommendations regarding current and potential trends related to law enforcement training, curriculum and needs. May direct and participate in basic academy physical training sessions as needed.Current or prior successful employment as a certified full-time peace officer in good standing at the local, state or federal level in a position equivalent to a Category I or II peace officer in Nevada. Applicants must have excellent organizational skills, demonstrate leadership, and sufficient working knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Power Point and internet resources.

Ability to read, understand and properly interpret and apply legal statutes, codes, and regulations. Current and full working knowledge of industry standards in policing methodology. Basic Instructor Development training with experience in instructing law enforcement related curriculum and/or law enforcement skills training.  In-depth understanding of and experience in adult learning theory and principles of a disciplined environment. Candidates should embrace a disciplined basic academy environment and have an understanding of the importance of leadership, command presence, officer safety, ethical behavior and physical fitness.
