Job Description:
Under general supervision and direction from regional management, the Crew Chief is responsible for overseeing the total operation of the assigned workgroup and facility, and serves as a lead worker on a continuous basis and assigns, explains, and monitors the work activities of a crew engaged in various semi-skilled to skilled tasks to maintain and preserve highways, shoulders, roadside areas, structures, and other broad pavement surfaces and related markings/signs in safe condition. Work is conducted in a safe manner. Performs independent skilled maintenance duties; work is performed outdoors in all types of weather with assignment to a geographic area or a specialized statewide unit; performs related work as assigned. The successful applicant will train and guide the work assignments of Highway Maintenance Workers, perform maintenance operations, assist the Supervisor in the management of personnel and report the work performance of crew members. The Crew Chief shares some of the responsibilities with the Supervisor and acts as the lead in the Supervisor's absence. Performs the same physical activities as a Hwy Maintenance Worker Senior. Acts as a role model for the crew and directs work activities for efficiency and quality.

Pay rate range of $24.228 per hour to $35.715 per hour. Pay rate may be commensurate with education and/or experience within fiscal constraints, if approved.

Job Duties:
Schedules, distributes/balances, and guides the work assignments of other maintenance workers in accordance with established workflow/assignment and related safety requirements, to assist supervisors in the timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
Reviews and reports to supervisors on the work performance of crew members to determine overall conformity to established rules, procedures, timetables and safety and quality standards and to document and communicate employee production levels and training needs.
Trains maintenance co-workers in specific maintenance tasks and job practices and procedures to improve and maintain the performance levels of these employees.
Directs maintenance operations such as armor coating, crack sealing, brush cleaning, guardrail repair, patching, and shoulder repair to maintain and preserve highways, roadsides, and other broad pavement surfaces; leads crew members engaged in servicing assigned equipment to comply with preventative maintenance schedules and keep equipment operational.
Operates all types of maintenance equipment such as trucks, rollers, front-end loaders, tractors, motor graders, snowplows, draglines, backhoes and distributors to repair and maintain highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces.
Operates specialized equipment such as lay-down machines, rock cutters, snoopers, semi-truck trailers and similar equipment to repair and maintain or provide support in the maintenance and repair of highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces.
Safely moves, drags, lifts, loads, and unloads various equipment, materials, supplies and hazardous materials or objects from the roadway; spreads and tamps surfacing materials.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements / Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications: Must be at least 18 years of age, and possess a valid driver's license. Possession of a Class A or B Commercial Drivers License with air brakes and tanker endorsements is required to be appointed to the Highway Maintenance Crew Chief class or ability to obtain the CDL within 90 days of employment. Loss of licenses/endorsements may result in termination of the employee. Experience in the maintenance of highways, roadsides, and other pavement surfaces and the operation of general and specialized equipment used to maintain and preserve these surfaces or to support these functions.
Preferred Qualifications: Minimum 3 years of construction/maintenance experience. A working knowledge of best practices, standards, and environmental regulations. Must be able to competently use NDOT software packages, including fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, Lucity, HCRS, MDSS, OnBase, and the ability to quickly learn other software. Proficiency in organization of assignments and scheduling. Ability to read, write, and perform mathematic skills. Must be able to work holidays, weekends, and any shift needed, as needed. Must have knowledge of operations and maintenance of all equipment used by the Department. Crew Chiefs are expected to have a basic knowledge of Nebraska Traffic Laws, as applicable to the safe and legal operation of equipment; they are also expected to have a working knowledge of the Department's Highway Maintenance and Safety Manual, the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, the standard specifications and plans for highway construction, the pavement maintenance manual, the Department's spill containment and control processes, and various other policy, procurement, and accounting procedures.
Other: The primary work location for this position is Hwy 30 North Platte, Nebraska. Your daily work activities change based on NDOT's needs and vary based on weather, environment, and road conditions. Your worksite may be on any road system including interstate or expressway, on secondary highways, rural highways, or gravel roadways, at our facilities or traveling to any district to perform emergency activities. A Valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with O Restriction and tanker endorsement is required within 90 days of hire through our in-house CDL training program. Must be a safe worker that is team oriented. Occasional overnight travel may be required. Regular and reliable attendance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: semi-complex highway maintenance and construction methods; equipment and tools used in maintenance activities; safe work procedures. Ability to: understand, follow, and communicate instructions without constant supervision; endure outdoor work under adverse weather conditions and long hours during emergencies; perform minor mechanical work on tools and equipment; recognize safety hazards and take steps to correct the situation; safely move, drag, lift 35 pounds frequently, up to 60 pounds occasionally (without assistance), and 90 or more pounds infrequently (with assistance); climb, bend, or stoop; select and operate various kinds of equipment appropriate to the maintenance activity; apply agency policies pertinent to maintenance operations and direction of assigned crews; train assigned employees; plan, explain, and direct work assignments of a small group of employees engaged in the same work; resolve crew problems. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills. Ability and willingness to learn and accept challenges by learning and adjusting to new technology and processes. Quality/results-oriented sense of urgency in performance of duties. Ability to work safely and demonstrate safe and reliable practices and behaviors. Ability to interact in a positive manner and treat co-workers and supervisors with dignity and respect, work to resolve conflicts, and make good decisions using sound judgment, processes and purpose. Ability to report to work for emergencies and snow removal within 30 minutes under normal driving conditions.
