Job Summary

The Missouri Capitol Police is seeking a dedicated law enforcement professional for the rank of Sergeant. This person must be willing to provide quality service, uphold a strong work ethic and accountability, and demonstrate a commitment to achieving our mission.

Missouri Capitol Police is a unique full-service law enforcement agency serving a community of state employees, elected officials, and the public. Our jurisdiction includes the 72-acre Capitol Complex and state office buildings in Cole County. Missouri Capitol Police provide services to more than 18,000 state employees and to hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

Our mission is to provide quality service that ensures the safety of the community we serve, guided by professionalism, fairness, personal honor, and integrity. We assist sworn personnel in performing general police duties, processes, and operations to ensure public safety and building security by enforcing state laws. We serve a community that includes state legislators, elected officials, and state employees, ensuring safe conditions so officials can fulfill their oath of office to all Missourians.

Job Responsibilities

The Capitol Police Sergeant supervises shifts and reports to the Patrol Commander. The Sergeant is responsible for maintaining and assisting with patrol at the Missouri Capitol and the surrounding state office buildings in Cole County. The Sergeant provides law enforcement services to the public, state employees, elected officials, and the Governor and family.

Directing officers on work procedures and ensuring compliance with departmental policies and performance standards. Providing leadership, guidance, and training to officers on the assigned shift. Coordinating staffing and resources for daily operations and special events. Conducting or overseeing criminal and administrative investigations, independently or in cooperation with other law enforcement partner agencies. Monitoring and reviewing officer performance.

Coordinating and assisting with responses to calls for service, crashes, emergencies, and dignitary protection within the Capitol jurisdiction. Enforcing Missouri laws, issuing citations, making arrests, and testifying in court as required. Protecting state property and maintaining public safety.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of the current Missouri Class A or B Peace Officer license issued by the Missouri Department of Public Safety.
  • Ability to maintain Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.
  • At least three (3) years of relevant law enforcement experience, with supervisory experience preferred.
  • Must possess a valid Missouri driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of law enforcement techniques and criminal investigations.
  • Sound decision-making and the ability to act independently in emergencies.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in firearms, defensive tactics, and other required law enforcement certifications.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with other public safety agencies, including local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Ability to work shifts, including holidays, weekends, and special events, as needed.

Eligible candidates will be required to complete a standardized written assessment and an oral interview administered by the Missouri Police Chief’s Association.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

  • Ability to pass an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Missouri Capitol Police prior to appointment.
  • Ability to pass a medical and visual examination with corrected eyesight to 20/40, a pre-employment drug screen, and a psychological evaluation, as prescribed by the Missouri Department of Public Safety, after a conditional offer of appointment has been made.
  • Physical ability to sit and stand for extended periods and to lift, carry, push, pull, or drag up to 180 pounds occasionally.
  • No objectionable tattoos and no tattoos visible while on duty (i.e., tattoos must be covered with uniform) or when representing the Missouri Capitol Police in an official capacity, unless approved by the Chief of Police.
  • Ability to successfully complete a six-month field training and probationary period.

The salary shown is the base pay rate. An employee with the Missouri Capitol Police receives a step increase on their hire date each year until they reach the maximum amount shown in the MCP pay range.
