Job Summary - Why you’ll love this position

As a consumer, you’re protected by the Missouri Weights, Measures and Consumer Protection Division every time you shop. This regulatory program is responsible for ensuring the accuracy of all commercial weighing and measuring devices throughout the state, as well as conducting egg quality inspections, package checks, price verifications, USDA Country of Origin Reviews/Follow-ups and enforcing the Unfair Milk Practices Act. This is a management level position responsible for the planning, directing and overseeing of the Device and Commodity Inspection Program.

The salary indicated represents the current regular pay rate for this position. If the individual selected is eligible for a pay differential (e.g., Years of Service), it will be added to total compensation on their paycheck. A pay differential does not raise base pay.

Responsibilities - What you’ll do
  • Directs or assists division leadership in policy development and program planning and coordination; assists in the evaluation of the effect of policy and/or organizational changes and new programs
  • Reviews and/or revises programs to ensure compliance of operations with laws, regulations, policies, plans and procedures
  • Selects, trains, directs and evaluates staff in area of assigned responsibility
  • Supervise approximately 21 program staff members
  • Participates in the development of budget requests and the monitoring of expenditures according to budget allocations/appropriations and recommends and/or initiates cost saving measures
  • Conducts investigations, institutes special studies, and prepares and/or reviews reports and related information to evaluate existing organizations, policies, procedures, and practices as related to the assigned program
  • Participates in the development, implementation or interpretation of new or revised program, departmental or legislative initiatives
  • Obtain a minimum of 40 hours continuing education per fiscal year to stay in compliance with 1 CSR 20-6110 Leadership Development rule
  • Attend manager meetings and leadership team retreats
  • Participate in Central Weights and Measures Association (CWMA) and or National Weights and Measures Council meetings to assist with the development and modifications made in NIST HB44, NIST HB130 and HB133
  • Travel throughout the state as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications - All you need for success

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Six (6) or more years of professional or technical/relevant experience in agriculture, business management, public administration or a closely related field. Experience can come from a combination of direct work experience and/or completion of a relevant bachelor’s degree program
  • Possess a valid MO Driver’s License
  • Previous experience managing and supervising staff with ability to prioritize workloads and direct staff to achieve program goals
  • Prior experience working in a regulatory environment/dealing with state or federal rules and regulations
  • Ability to travel throughout the state, as needed, to learn the job and build strong relationships with field staff
  • Ability to be responsive and communicate clearly and effectively with multiple stakeholders, including Department leadership, fellow team members and the general public
  • Must be willing and able to read, comprehend and apply the requirements of NIST Handbook 130, 133 and 44 accurately, as they pertain to the job of a weights and measures inspector

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Extensive leadership experience and advanced computer skills, customer service experience and problem-solving abilities
  • Knowledge of Continuous Improvement Principles
  • Proficient with administrative rulemaking
