Job Summary
MSUM has an exciting opportunity to join the HR team! The Assistant Director of Human Resources provides advanced professional level expertise, interpretation, and guidance to administration, managers, supervisors, and all employees on the full range of all HR services including but not limited to recruiting & selection, affirmative action, classification, compensation & benefits, reasonable accommodations, performance management, employee & labor relations, organizational design and workforce planning.
The Assistant Director partners with supervisors and administrators university-wide to ensure organizational effectiveness through proper alignment of structure, staffing, processes, and culture. This position actively participates in the creation of processes and programs, including change initiatives and continuous improvement measures aligned with university strategies and objectives. Additionally, the Assistant Director provides team leadership and training to HR colleagues in the areas of contract interpretation and transactional processes.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business, or related field AND at least three (3) years of professional human resources experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Professional human resources experience in functional areas such as talent acquisition, classification, compensation, employee relations, labor relations, training and development.
- Experience with laws relating to human resources management including but not limited to federal and Minnesota employment law, Fair Labor Standards Act, Public Employees Labor Relations Act, Family Medical Leave Act, and American with Disabilities Act, and personnel laws and rules sufficient to interpret, administer, advise, and provide recommendations to agency staff, managers, supervisors and administrators on all aspects of Human Resources functions.
- Ability to communicate with sensitivity and discretion, with a strong commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office applications and human resource information systems, such as Workday.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional human resource certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, etc.)
- Working knowledge of collective bargaining agreements and applicable laws, rules, and policies sufficient to administer, interpret, and provide guidance to others.
- Advanced verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills, including making informative presentations and leading professional development sessions.
- Excellent process facilitation and project management skills.
Additional Requirements
In accordance with the Minnesota State Vehicle Fleet Safety Program, employees driving on college/university business who use a rental or state vehicle shall be required to conform to Minnesota State's vehicle use criteria and consent to a Motor Vehicle Records check.
