Job Summary

The Office is seeking an Assistant Attorney General in the Civil Rights Division of the Office.

A successful candidate will have the opportunity to support the mission of the office by:

  • Enforcing and vindicating the rights of Minnesota consumers impacted by unlawful discrimination across housing, education, lending, and places of public accommodation
  • Investigating and prosecuting violations of state consumer protection laws, including false advertising and unlawful, unfair, or fraudulent business practices
  • Leading and supporting complex, high-profile civil litigation with potential nationwide impact, including cases involving vulnerable populations such as immigrants, the elderly, and low-income renters
  • Drafting amicus briefs on significant civil rights and consumer protection issues
  • Reviewing and proposing legislation and regulations affecting consumers
  • Engaging in consumer outreach, education, and advocacy initiatives

This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment (combination of in-office work and telework).

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Graduation from a law school accredited by the ABA and actively licensed in good standing to practice law in the State of Minnesota (or ability to obtain licensure within 90 days of hire) or current licensure within another state with ability to transfer licensure within 90 days of hire
  • Outstanding writing, research, and oral communication/advocacy skills (writing sample is required with application submission)
  • Ability to:
    • multitask by managing an active caseload and meeting tight deadlines
    • contribute positively to a team and interact successfully with clients and members of the public
  • Experience litigating at trial in state or federal courts
  • Experience conducting complex investigations, negotiating settlements, and drafting legal pleadings, and motions
  • Proven ability to work in an inclusive, creative, and collaborative work environment
  • Proven ability to show excellent judgement, character, and work ethic

To be considered at the S2 level, candidates must have at least 6 years of directly related experience. To be considered at the S3 level, candidates must have at least 12 years of directly related experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four to five years of experience in sophisticated, complex civil litigation, including depositions, e-discovery, large-scale document review, motion practice, and trial participation
  • Experience with immigrant rights, enforcement of the Minnesota Human Rights Act, and tenant protections
  • Fluency in a second language

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to move and transport such articles as files, laptop computer and resource materials weighing up to 20 pounds
