What are the responsibilities and job description for the Regulation Agent 9-12 (Investigator) - Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards position at State of Michigan?


This position is the recognized resource responsible for the comprehensive investigations for violations of the selection, employment, training, licensing, and license revocation standards for all licensed law enforcement officers in Michigan per Public Act 203 of 1965, as amended. This investigator is responsible for gathering information and documenting evidence collected in response to a violation of the mandated selection and employment standards and forwarding the information via the chain of command to the Executive Director and Commission for final action. These investigations could result in an applicant's permanent denial into the licensing process, or the imposition of license sanctions by the Commission up to and including permanent license revocation. These investigations may also be the basis for referral for criminal charges if violations of the law are found. Other statutory responsibilities include investigation of violations of the funding and reporting requirements established by Public Act 302 of 1982, reviewing and determining the eligibility for licensing of applicants for a Private Security Police Agency license per Public Act 330 of 1968, and investigating violations of the mandates of other statutes and administrative laws falling under the Commission's purview.


POSITION DESCRIPTION


 
Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in business administration, criminal justice, criminology, law enforcement, police administration, security and loss prevention, or a related field.

Experience

Regulation Agent 9
No specific type or amount is required.

Regulation Agent 10
One year of professional experience providing regulation and investigative services equivalent to a Regulation Agent 9.

Regulation Agent P11
Two years of professional experience providing regulation and investigative services equivalent to a Regulation Agent, including one year equivalent to a Regulation Agent 10.

Regulation Agent 12
Three years of professional experience providing regulation and investigative services equivalent to a Regulation Agent, including one year equivalent to a Regulation Agent P11.

 

Regulation Agent 9
Two years of experience as a sworn detective at a law enforcement agency may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Regulation Agent 10
Three years of experience as a sworn detective at a law enforcement agency may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Regulation Agent P11
Four years of experience as a sworn detective at a law enforcement agency may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.

Regulation Agent 12
Five years of experience as a sworn detective at a law enforcement agency may be substituted for the education and experience requirements.


 

This position requires passing a pre-employment screening, including passing a drug screen, criminal history background check, and a fingerprint check by the Michigan State Police.

Applicants selected for interview will also be required to complete two exercises representative of the job tasks performed daily in this position.

Applicants will be screened on the following criteria:
  • Experience working for a public law enforcement agency as a fully empowered, licensed law enforcement officer for a minimum of 5 years, and
  • Experience in conducting administrative and background investigations and writing investigative reports, and 
  • The type and level of training related to investigations focusing on administrative and background investigations, and
  • Testifying at administrative and criminal hearings, and
  • Experience in working with external groups, presenting findings and making recommendations.
