What are the responsibilities and job description for the Michigan State Police Trooper - Lateral Entry position at State of Michigan?
The Michigan State Police (MSP) is looking for current Michigan MCOLES licensed officers who are interested in becoming troopers. For those looking for a career serving the community, being a role model and making a difference in many lives, Michigan State Police has opportunities within its ranks performing a full range of state-wide law enforcement assignments including road trooper, community service trooper, canine handler, tactical bike officer, crime scene technician, emergency services team, narcotics investigations, cyber-crime, bomb squad member, and many other career path opportunities.
Appointed applicants are initially assigned as recruits (earning a paycheck and health insurance benefits) to the MSP Training Academy Recruit School to complete the training program (approximately 12 weeks), as well as other course work and physical training intended to provide the knowledge and skills required to function as a State Police Trooper. Applicants are asked to submit three preferred post locations when receiving their conditional offer of employment. Every effort is made to fulfill post location requests while balancing the operational needs of the agency. All applicants will receive their post assignment in their Appointment Letter prior to recruit school starting. Successful completion of recruit school is mandatory for continued employment. Upon graduating from recruit school, the probationary trooper at their assigned State Police post must satisfactorily complete an 18-month probationary period in this classification. Successful completion of the probationary period is mandatory for continued employment.

Education
Possession of a high school diploma or GED Certificate.
Experience
To be eligible, applicants must have two years of continuous law enforcement service and either be a Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) licensed police officer or obtain the MCOLES Recognition of Prior Training and Experience if they are an out-of-state police officer. Lateral entry applicants will complete the standard hiring process with the opportunity to select their top three post locations in order to continue to serve in their local communities if they so desire.
Willingness to submit to a thorough background investigation designed to measure the applicant's suitability for police work.
Must be a United States citizen.
Must be a resident of the State of Michigan before graduation from the Academy.
Must be at least 21 years of age by recruit school graduation.
Must have a valid Michigan driver's license by recruit school graduation.
Must possess a satisfactory driving record.
Any marijuana use after submitting an application is prohibited and will result in a 1-year deferment from the selection process.
