Job Description

Under the direction of the Medical Provider (MP)/ Charge Nurse, the Paramedic follows assigned duties. Provides urgent, emergent and routine care to prisoners and staff, when needed. Maintains licensure where applicable, including ACLS certification. Follows MDOC policies and procedures. The Paramedic is expected to exercise considerable judgment in selecting the most appropriate course of action for emergent, life threatening situations. The Paramedic performs IV insertions, blood draws, and provides appropriate ACLS interventions. The employee may be hired for a specific area, but on occasion, may be held responsible to move to any medical setting within the facility or complex. Works 100% of the time within the secured perimeter of the prison.

Special Requirements, Licenses, And Certifications

  • Emergency Medical Technician-E positions require possession of a MDHHS Emergency Medical Technician license and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Emergency Medical Technician or Paramedic licenses that are recognized nationally or by other states will meet the licensure requirement; however, employees have 6 months from the date of employment to obtain the appropriate MDHHS licensure.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a valid Michigan driver's license.
  • Positions in this class are test-designated and subject to pre-appointment and random-selection drug and alcohol testing.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification. All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
