Position: Seasonal Maintenance Equipment Operator II

Location: Stoneham Labor Yard

Start Date: 6/7/26

End Date: 10/12/26 (17 weeks)

Work Hours: 40 hours - Shift varies; holidays and weekends required

# of positions: 1

Salaries are based upon full-time/40 hours worked per week. Work schedules and days off are at the discretion of the Supervisor. This position may require working weekends and/or holidays.

Please Note: Salary range compensation by hours worked is determined by several factors, including experience, seniority, the agency’s budget, and the nature of the role (e.g., short-term contract vs. full-time position). For union positions, salary is determined in accordance with the applicable bargaining unit's salary schedule and governing regulations.

The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks applicants for the position seasonal Maintenance Equipment Operator II at the Nahant Labor Yard for the 2026 Summer season.


General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Safety Sensitive Positions require that the employee participate in the DCR Alcohol and Controlled Substance Testing Program Policy and be subject to a Pre-placement and Random DOT Drug and Alcohol testing.

Incumbents in this position will operate heavy power-operated equipment such as street sweepers, backhoes, front-end loaders and bulldozers used in the construction, maintenance and/or repair of roadways, parkways, parks, etc.; operates heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, tractor-drawn mowers, surf rakes and other equipment for beach, highway and grounds maintenance; operates light vehicles such as passenger cars and panel trucks for transporting personnel and materials; performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment; maintains records and prepares reports; and inspects contractual services.

The basic purpose of this work is to operate heavy power-operated and other equipment used in excavating, grading and other activities to construct, maintain and/or repair roadways, parkways, pedestrian bridges, roadsides, parks, beaches and other projects.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operates heavy power-operated equipment such as cranes, backhoes, front-end loaders, bulldozers and catch basin machines used to construct, maintain or repair roadways, parkways, parks or drainage systems.

  • Operates heavy dump trucks, snow plows, sanders, sweepers or tractor-drawn mowers, and surf rakes or sickle bars to maintain roadways, parkways and grounds.

  • Performs routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment such as lubricating, fueling, cleaning and checking tire pressure, battery, oil, water and coolant levels, etc.

  • Maintains records and prepares reports on such matters as vehicle use, mileage, destinations, accidents, gas and other vehicle expenses, such as fuel, repairs, etc.

  • Loads and unloads furniture, equipment and supplies; mixes and applies materials such as sand, salt, gravel, etc.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction and supervise staff.

  • Performs related work as assigned.

Incumbents of positions at this level also:
Operate equipment such as, Roller - Over 5 Ton; Loader 4 Cubic Yard or greater; Basket Truck - Over 30 feet; Hydro-Crane; and Cable Crane, etc.

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 2 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

  • Possession of a current and valid 2A Massachusetts Hoisting license (This is referred to in the Job Specs as Mass. Class C Equipment Operators License)

  • Possession of current and valid CDL license (This is referred to in the Job Specs as a Mass. Class 2 Motor Vehicle Operators License)


    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of the methods and techniques in the use, care and safe operation of a wide variety of heavy and specialized equipment.

  • Knowledge of the preventative maintenance procedures relative to heavy equipment used for roadwork, parkland work and snow clearing work.

  • Knowledge of the State Laws, pertaining to the operation of equipment upon the highways.

  • Skilled in the operation of equipment assigned.

  • Skilled in the operation of a wide variety of heavy equipment.

  • Ability to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment.

  • Ability to operate snow clearing equipment such as snow plows, sanders and front-end loaders.

  • Ability to make minor emergency vehicle repairs.

  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time in varying climatic conditions.

  • Knowledge of the standard procedure in operating mobile radio communication equipment.

Special Requirements:
I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver's License (CDL).

II. Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class C Equipment Operator's License issued by the Department of Public Safety.
