Introduction

The Maryland School for the Deaf provides an inclusive, language-rich environment for deaf and hard of hearing students from birth through age 21. Rooted in a bilingual education approach, we ensure full access to American Sign Language and English across comprehensive academic, extracurricular, and student life programs. This is an 11 month, school year position.� This position does not work when school is closed during winter break, spring break, and during the summer months.

Main Purpose of Job

MSD Cook II is an intermediate level of work in the Dietary Department of the Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus. The Cook II is responsible for the production and serving of meals in accordance with the facility's Food Safety Program and Wellness Policy; all Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus, and Dietary Department prescribed policies and procedures; and all applicable health and sanitation regulations and standards.

POSITION DUTIES

Prepares foods requiring both simple and complex preparation. Assembles tray line and serve meals according to established scheduled daily menu, using correct portion sizes and techniques. Cleans and sanitizes work areas and equipment. Prepares food items such as vegetables, salads, meats, and beverages by baking, frying, broiling, steaming, and mixing in accordance with recipes and dietetic guidelines. Applies good service principles and methods related to food handling, proper food storage, and temperature control. Operates kitchen equipment and appliances, such as mixers, cookers, ovens, stoves, toasters, coffee urns, microwaves, and related equipment. Cleans and maintains utensils and work area in accordance with applicable safety and sanitary standards. Protects equipment, utensils, food, and other items from contamination, spoilage, and pilferage. Keeps records of supplies used and number of persons served. May train, assign, and review the work of Dietary Workers or Food Service Assistants in cooking techniques. Performs other related duties, must be flexible to provide timely assistance for an efficient food service operation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: None Experience: Three years of experience in food preparation at a public or governmental establishment, such as a restaurant, hospital or comparable institution involving the cooking of meats and vegetables and the preparation of salads and beverages. Notes: 1.�Candidates may substitute graduation from an accredited vocational/technical high school with a major in food service or a related field for up to two years of the required experience. 2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non-commissioned officer in culinary classifications or food service specialty codes in the food preparation and serving field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be proficient in or willing to learn ASL. Must be able to lift 50 pounds and stand for extended periods of time. Serve Safe food handler certification preferred.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

Candidates must be willing to become Serve Safe Certified.

BARGAINING UNIT STATUS

In accordance with AFSCME Article 44, all positions advertised as contractual are temporary assignments. Such assignments may include, but are not limited to, short-term grants, defined temporary projects lasting 24 months or less, emergency basis appointments for 12 months or less, retirees from State service, and positions less than fifty percent (50%) full-time equivalent (FTE). Please note that all contractual agreements and staffing allocations are subject to adjustment based on student enrollment and operational needs.

BENEFITS

Contractual employees who work for an agency covered under the State Employee and Retiree Health and Welfare Benefits Program, have a current employment contract and work 30 or more hours a week (or on average 130 hours per month) may be eligible for subsidized health benefits coverage for themselves and their dependents. As a contractual employee, you will be responsible for paying 25% of the premiums for your medical and prescription coverage, including any eligible dependents you have enrolled. The State of Maryland will subsidize the remaining 75% of the cost for these benefits. You can also elect to enroll in dental coverage, accidental death and dismemberment insurance, and life insurance, but will be responsible to pay the full premium for these benefits. Leave may be granted to a contractual employee at a rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked, not to exceed 40 hours per calendar year.
