The Southern University at New Orleans Police Department (SUNOPD) is an internationally accredited law enforcement agency. SUNOPD is a full-service law enforcement agency staffed by professional, highly trained, commissioned police officers 24-hours a day. The goal of the SUNO Police department is to provide for a safe, secure, enjoyable, and fulfilling university experience and to further improve conditions in and around Southern University at New Orleans.
this position is responsible for protecting lives and property by conducting foot and mobile security patrols; enforcing parking and traffic regulations; rendering emergency services; investigating minor crimes and making arrest when necessary. Provides a limited range of police services. The position is non-exempt under the provisions of the FLSA and may work rotating 12 hour shifts. This position is subject to overtime, working weekends, holidays, shift work, and 24-hour call. This position has a physical component which includes the ability to run, jump, stand for long periods, climb, crawl, carry, drag, work in all weather conditions, and change flat tires. This position requires the ability to shoot a gun with either hand. This position requires the ability to work in a collegial manner, displaying excellent customer service skills.
EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will substitute for one year of the required experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.
Possession of an active Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification may be required.
An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.
Protects lives and property through active foot patrols and mobile patrols, enforcing laws, enforces parking regulations and investigating crimes.
Responds to emergencies and renders assistance as required.
Prepares reports on activities.
Provides crowd and traffic control at special events; may be required to intervene in situations utilizing force if necessary to make an arrest, to restore order, prevent interference with normal operations or to protect persons or property.
Provides first aid and emergency services.
Responds to emergencies and renders assistance as required.
Operates police network computers and dispatches police officers in response to calls.
Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This will be filled as a Probational appointmentWork Schedule: 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. (This position is non-exempt under the provisions of the FLSA and may work 12 hour shifts. This position is subject to overtime, working weekends, holidays, shift work and 24-hour call).
Compensation: This position has a Special Entrance Rate (SER) of $41,350.40.
