The McNeese University Police Department is accepting applications for a Police Officer 1 or Police Officer 2, depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.

This position exists to receive, review, and respond to requests from University Police Officers and Police Officers with outside law enforcement agencies. This position serves as the point of contact for the university for emergency situations, accidents, incidents, complaints, etc., using independent discretion, judgment in dispatching officers to various locations. Provide a limited lower-level range of law enforcement duties and requires the ability to work in a collegial manner, displaying excellent customer service skills.   May be required to possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license at time of appointment. May be required to complete a Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) course. May be required to qualify annually with a firearm.  Must be 18 years of age at time of application.

Applicants must have State Civil Service test scores for 2100-PSE (Protective Services Exam) by the close of this announcement in order to be considered for this vacancy. As per HR Handbook, SCS rule 22.8(e), allows applicants who possess a Louisiana Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification to be exempt from the PSE (Protective Services Exam).

The successful candidate must possess a valid Louisiana driver’s license and must maintain qualification with firearms. An extensive background investigation will be performed on the final candidates to include pre-employment psychological examination and polygraph, DNA testing, Fingerprinting, Prior Employment History Verification, Drug Testing, Reference Check, Criminal and Misdemeanor records search, Basic Knowledge Test and Driver’s License Records search.
No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

Job Duties:

The Police Officer will:  

  • Protects lives and property through active mobile and foot patrols, enforcing laws and regulations of the State, City, and University.
  • Responds to emergencies within the University jurisdiction and provides necessary services as required. 
  • Enforces parking and traffic regulations across campus sites that may include the use of radar/LIDAR for traffic enforcement.
  • Provide security for campus-wide events and activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Position-Specific Details:

Location and Work Schedule: This position is for a Police Officer in University Police.


Appointment Type and Essential Abilities: This vacancy is being announced as a classified position and is open to all qualified applicants and may be filled as a probationary or promotional appointment.  This position is non-exempt under the provisions of the FLSA and may work rotating 12-hour shifts, and is subject to overtime, working weekends, holidays, shift work, and 24-hour call.  This position has a physical component which includes the ability to run, jump, stand for long periods, climb, crawl, carry, drag, work in all weather conditions, and change flat tires, and requires the ability to shoot a gun with either hand. 


Career Progression: As part of a Career Progression Group, the vacancy may be filled from this recruitment as a Police Officer 1 or Police Officer 2 depending on the level of experience of the selected applicant.  


Compensation: **Applicant will be eligible for the Special Entrance Rate (SER).
