By joining our Hardin County Unit as a Highway Technician I in Hardin County, you’ll have the opportunity to perform intermediate level work in roadway or roadside maintenance operations to help maintain 443 miles of state roadways in Hardin County.
Summary of Responsibilities:
- Performs a variety of intermediate level highway maintenance work including grade ditches, roll hot mix, spray chemicals, use backhoe to set pipe, or basic equipment repair.
- Operates intermediate equipment such as asphalt hot boxes, backhoes, belt loaders, concrete mixers, front-end loaders, hydro- seeders, pipe cleaners, road wideners, rollers, skid steers with attachments, slope mowers, tandem dump trucks, and tow pavers
- Responsible for installation of routine traffic control on job sites in accordance with MUTCD standards.
- Responds to snow and ice events and other emergency events along state roadways.
- Flag for operations requiring traffic control
- Experience working on rough terrain and/or in general labor or trades and in all weather conditions
- Previous experience with KYTC Highway Technician Academy
- 4 years of experience in equipment operation for road maintenance

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: High school graduate.
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Must have four years of construction or highway maintenance experience.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Graduate of a college or university with an associate's degree in engineering technology, construction management, engineering science, engineering mechanics, geology, earth science, industrial drafting, design technology, construction technology or a related field will substitute for two (2) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in engineering will substitute for four (4) years of the highway related experience in construction and maintenance. College coursework related to any of these fields will substitute for experience on a year- for-year basis.
Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION: NONE
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): Must be 18 years of age. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a Class A commercial driver's license with tanker endorsement to qualify for employment in this job classification. The employee must successfully complete the KYTC Highway Technician Academy Level 2 or equivalent within one year of employment in this job classification. Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification. Employing agency is responsible for ensuring employee possesses and maintains required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials.
Working Conditions
Incumbents in this job title typically perform their work at a highway maintenance facility or section office, at work sites throughout the assigned work area and when necessary, district wide. Incumbent will be exposed to risks inherent to working with large equipment and machines involved with road construction. Must be able to work extended hours and be outside during inclement weather.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
