Position Summary & Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Assistant Clinical Program Director for the Psychiatric Services Program (PSP) supports the Clinical Program Director in the daily clinical and operational oversight of PSP treatment services, promoting high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered care through treatment oversight, clinical supervision, interdisciplinary coordination, regulatory compliance, performance improvement, and staff development. The position provides day-to-day clinical leadership and consultation to assigned clinical staff, assists with monitoring treatment planning and documentation, participates in treatment team and program meetings, and helps identify and address opportunities to improve patient care and clinical operations. The Assistant Clinical Program Director works collaboratively with the Clinical Program Director, Administrative Program Director, clinical department leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to implement program priorities and maintain compliance with hospital policies and applicable regulatory standards.

This role provides direct administrative and performance supervision of assigned master's-level clinical staff, including LMLPs, LPCs, and other qualified behavioral health professionals. The position establishes performance expectations; monitors clinical practice, documentation, and treatment-related responsibilities; provides coaching and feedback; conducts performance evaluations; addresses performance concerns; and supports professional development and accountability in accordance with organizational policies and each employee's applicable scope of practice. Administrative and performance supervision provided by this position does not replace or constitute formal clinical supervision required for professional licensure, which shall be provided by appropriately licensed and qualified supervisors in accordance with Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board requirements and applicable professional standards.

In addition, the position oversees master's-level practicum and internship students, including assisting with orientation, supervision coordination, performance monitoring, educational experiences, and communication with academic programs. The position serves as a primary point of contact for master's-level students and ensures their activities remain consistent with their education, training, supervision requirements, and scope of practice. Formal clinical supervision required by the student's academic program, professional licensing requirements, or applicable regulatory standards shall be provided by appropriately licensed and qualified supervisors in accordance with Kansas Behavioral Sciences Regulatory Board requirements and applicable professional standards.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:

PSP Treatment Oversight & Clinical Consultation:

  • Assist the Clinical Program Director with the ongoing oversight and evaluation of active treatment services within PSP.
  • Provide day-to-day clinical leadership, consultation, and support to assigned clinical staff.
  • Monitor implementation of established treatment expectations and identify concerns requiring follow-up with the Clinical Program Director.
  • Participate in treatment team meetings to provide clinical guidance, consultation, and recommendations regarding patient care.
  • Assist with monitoring the timeliness, quality, and completeness of treatment plans and related clinical documentation.
  • Review clinical documentation and treatment-related practices to identify opportunities for improvement and promote consistency with hospital expectations.
  • Assist Treatment Plan Coordinators and other clinical staff with questions regarding treatment planning, documentation, and coordination of services.
  • Support the implementation of evidence-based treatment practices and program-specific clinical interventions.
  • Assist with monitoring patient progress and treatment outcomes and communicate identified trends or concerns to the Clinical Program Director.
  • Provide clinical consultation to staff regarding complex patient care issues within the scope of the position's qualifications and responsibilities.
  • Assist with review and quality assurance activities related to forensic evaluation reports and other clinical documents, as assigned.
  • Assist with monitoring compliance with applicable CMS, The Joint Commission (TJC), KDHE, hospital, and program requirements.
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives focused on patient care, safety, treatment effectiveness, and clinical outcomes.
  • Provide coverage and clinical leadership support during the absence of the Clinical Program Director, as assigned.

Clinical Staff Supervision and Performance Management

  • Provide day-to-day supervisory oversight of assigned master's-level clinical staff, ensuring adherence to established clinical, professional, and programmatic expectations.
  • Monitor staff performance through review of clinical documentation, treatment planning, patient outcomes, direct observation, and other established performance indicators.
  • Establish clear performance expectations and provide ongoing feedback, coaching, and direction to support professional development and accountability.
  • Conduct and document performance evaluations and address identified performance concerns through appropriate coaching, training, performance improvement plans, or corrective action in collaboration with the Clinical Program Director.
  • Monitor adherence to PSP treatment expectations, hospital policies and procedures, regulatory requirements, and established clinical standards.
  • Provide supervisory consultation regarding complex clinical situations, treatment planning, documentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and professional practice within the clinician's scope of practice.
  • Identify staff training and professional development needs and coordinate or recommend appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Assist with onboarding and orientation of newly hired master's-level clinicians, including communication of PSP expectations, policies, documentation standards, and performance requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate supervisory and performance documentation and communicate significant personnel or clinical concerns to the Clinical Program Director and Administrative Program Director.
  • Participate in program meetings, performance improvement activities, and other initiatives supporting clinical quality, staff accountability, and effective PSP operations.

Psychology Master's-Level Internship and Practicum Oversight

  • Serve as the primary PSP administrative and programmatic contact for master's-level psychology practicum and internship students.
  • Coordinate the onboarding and orientation of master's-level practicum and internship students assigned to PSP.
  • Collaborate with academic programs to support appropriate placement, educational requirements, and communication regarding student experiences.
  • Assist in developing and coordinating meaningful clinical learning experiences consistent with students' educational level and approved scope of training.
  • Coordinate with appropriately licensed PSP staff regarding clinical supervision and oversight of master's-level students.
  • Monitor student participation, progress, attendance, professional conduct, and completion of assigned educational requirements.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation regarding student placements, training activities, supervision, evaluations, and required academic documentation.
  • Conduct or coordinate regular check-ins with students to assess progress, address concerns, and support successful completion of practicum or internship requirements.
  • Assist clinical supervisors in providing structured feedback and performance evaluations to master's-level students.
  • Identify student performance concerns and communicate them promptly to the Clinical Program Director and appropriate academic representatives, when necessary.
  • Ensure master's-level students understand and follow hospital policies, confidentiality requirements, ethical standards, and scope-of-practice limitations.
  • Assist with developing educational opportunities that expose students to interdisciplinary behavioral health practice and the unique clinical environment of a state psychiatric hospital.
  • Promote professional development and appropriate integration of students into the PSP treatment environment.
  • Assist with recruitment and retention of high-quality master's-level practicum and internship students to strengthen PSP's behavioral health workforce pipeline.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of master's-level training experiences and recommend improvements to the Clinical Program Director.

Training and Professional Development

  • Assist the Clinical Program Director with identifying clinical training needs based on performance data, regulatory requirements, patient care trends, and staff feedback.
  • Assist in developing and delivering clinical education and training for PSP staff.
  • Provide orientation and ongoing education regarding PSP clinical expectations, treatment practices, documentation standards, and applicable policies.
  • Assist with communicating changes to clinical policies, procedures, regulatory requirements, and evidence-based practices.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to assigned clinical staff consistent with established performance expectations.
  • Assist with monitoring staff performance and identifying opportunities for professional development.
  • Participate in performance evaluations and performance improvement processes as assigned.
  • Assist with developing individualized training or improvement plans when performance concerns are identified.
  • Promote continuous professional development and evidence-based clinical practice.
  • Support the development of clinical competencies among staff and master's-level students.
  • Assist with identifying emerging training needs related to patient safety, treatment practices, documentation, professional boundaries, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support a culture of accountability, respectful communication, continuous learning, and professional growth within PSP.


Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in psychology, Counseling, Social Work, or another related behavioral health or human services field from an appropriately accredited institution.
  • Must hold a current Kansas professional license appropriate to the scope and responsibilities of the position, such as a Licensed Clinical Psychotherapist (LCP), Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC), Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW), or other independently licensed behavioral health professional as determined appropriate by the agency.
  • Two years of professional experience in behavioral health, mental health, psychology, counseling, social work, or a related clinical setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide clinical leadership, communicate effectively, collaborate within interdisciplinary teams, and apply sound judgment when addressing clinical and programmatic concerns.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to work effectively with individuals experiencing serious mental illness and/or complex behavioral health needs. Upon offer for the position, must be able to successfully complete required drug screening, background investigation, and security clearance requirements for employment at Larned State Hospital.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of professional experience in behavioral health, psychiatric, forensic, medical, correctional, or other complex clinical setting.
  • Experience providing clinical supervision, mentoring, or professional development to behavioral health staff or students. Experience working with master's-level psychology practicum or internship students, including coordination of educational experiences and collaboration with academic programs.
  • Experience working within an inpatient psychiatric or forensic behavioral health environment.
  • Experience with treatment planning, interdisciplinary treatment teams, clinical documentation, performance improvement, and regulatory compliance.
  • Experience developing or implementing clinical programs, policies, procedures, training initiatives, or quality improvement activities.
  • Demonstrated experience using data and evidence-based practices to evaluate clinical services and identify opportunities for improvement.
